October 3-4 – Delivery Dates for Caldwell Visual Artists Competition work – All Caldwell county artists invited to bring two pieces of artwork & $10 entry fee to compete for cash awards totaling $650. (Prospectus attached.)

Special Note: Nancy will be taking a full-time position at Grace Hospital next week, and the Caldwell Arts Council is looking for a part-time staff position of Shop Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. The job includes: Shop Manager - Merchandising and maintaining shop inventory - Managing consignment accounts - Managing monthly sales journals and artist payments Volunteer Coordinator - Maintaining a list of active volunteers - Recruiting and training new volunteers - Volunteer staffing of the programs of the Caldwell Arts Council - Working with the Board of Directors A successful candidate will have: - Strong people skills - Work well as a part of a team - Value and believe in the arts - Have a flexible schedule that allows for some weekend and evening work - Computer skills, know Microsoft Office suite of programs The job is 10-12 hours per week. The job is contractual and hourly. Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter to the Caldwell Arts Council by October 14th.

Caldwell Arts Council is still accepting applications for the Stevens Family Scholarship which will pay all but $50 (including supplies) cost for experienced Caldwell County visual artists to attend a workshop at Cheap Joe’s in Boone. See application attached for details; deadline is October 14, 2011.

Christmas is coming – and that means our annual “Taste of Christmas” event is coming too! This event will be held on December 9th at the Irish Rose Bed & Breakfast. Friends of the arts council prepare & bring their favorite holiday finger foods, hors d’oeuvres, main dishes, beverages, or desserts for guests to ‘taste,’ and provide the recipe for our holiday cookbook. Do you have some favorite holiday recipes that you are willing to share and prepare for this event? You’ll get a free cookbook, and support the arts council at the same time. September 30-October 1 – Cheap Joe’s in Boone is having their annual sidewalk sale on paints, brushes, easels, and much more. 10am-6pm Friday, 10am-5pm Saturday. Rain or shine – huge savings on clearance, discontinued & overstock items as well.

October 1 (Saturday) – 9am-3pm – Ages 16 & up –PIGMENTS OF YOUR IMAGINATION workshop at Caldwell Arts Council – Instructor: Cathy Taylor -- Enjoy a magical experience, starting with a playful “what if” morning and ending with gorgeous, fantastic creations! $50/person; either adults or children aged 10 & older (with adult supervision) may participate. October 1 deadline to register - for October 11, 18 & 25 Full Circle Arts is offering a class in jewelry by P.L. Rhodes, an accomplished jewelry maker and metal sculptor. October 1, 7:30pm – Western Piedmont Symphony Orchestra’s fabulous quartet-in-residence, the Kontras Quartet, will present their first concert of the season on Saturday, October 1 at 7:30 pm (new time) at the Arts & Science Center in Hickory. Tickets are $20 each. The pre-concert dinner, catered by Liazzo’s, will begin at 5:30 pm in the Arts & Science Center. Cost is $35/person. October 1 – Blowing Rock Art & History Museum Grand Opening – the new facility will feature rotating exhibits promoting visual arts, history & heritage of the mountains. Grand opening exhibits will feature work by the late Elliott Daingerfield, with another highlighting the history of the Blowing Rock, and the third tracing the evolution of hotels in the area as they evolved along with the town’s tourism industry. Located on corner of Main & Chestnut Streets (159 Chestnut Street) in downtown Blowing Rock. Festival goers can walk through the whimsical world of metal sculpture by Robert Sinclair, whose creativity incorporates a veritable zoo of creatures from recycled metal, found objects, and stone. At Art in the Shop, you'll be able to purchase a piece of Outlaw Pottery, including several brand new and very different face jugs that will be coming out of the kiln right before the show. You can also glaze your own Raku bisque pottery and have it fired onsite at their Create Your Own Raku Pottery booth.

October 2 - "Loving Lenoir 2011" weekend for reunions, community service, showing love for those who made a difference, and for celebrating w/ music. Make plans to support your community by doing community service projects on September 30 & October 1, and later enjoying a concert featuring students from the Harper School of Performing Arts, soprano Caroline Whisnant, a barbershop quartet, and the College Avenue choir just to name a few. Dr. Neil Isaac is organizing the concert in memory of Ken and Gail Little. Several homecomings and high school reunions are scheduled during the weekend, culminating Sunday at 2pm “Loving Lenoir 2011 Concert,” at College Ave Baptist featuring reunion choir, quartet, brass, winds, instrumentalists, & selections from Caroline Whisnant (formerly of Lenoir, now Opera in Germany), play, sing and honor Lenoir’s musical heritage....and ending with an all-welcome singing of "Hallelujah Chorus" by Handel. Event is free, but love offerings will be accepted for a worthy cause in Lenoir.

October 2 – 10:30am - Jazz Mass at Grace Episcopal, Morganton - The Centerpiece Jazz Quartet will perform a Jazz Mass at Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton, Sunday, Oct. 2 at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. They will provide New Orleans-style jazz for all the service music, including fraction anthems, and hymns. Songs include “Wade in the Water,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and Amazing Grace.” The group will also perform “Let Us Break Bread Together,” “God of Grace, God of Glory” and “Blue Monk.” Joseph Hasty, a member of Grace who also sings in the choir, leads the group, founded in 1995. Centerpiece performs in Western North Carolina for clubs and private parties and has provided Jazz Mass service music for other parishes in the area (St. Mary’s and St. Stephen’s, Morganton, and St. Matthias, Asheville). In addition to Hasty, who plays rhythm guitar and sings lead vocals, Centerpiece includes Robert George, saxophone; Ben McPherron, upright bass; and Dick Hull on lead guitar. Now through December 30th – Local photographer Bryon Blakemore is displaying his beautiful photographic artwork at the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Art-in-Healing Gallery continuing through December 30th. This gallery is open 7am-8pm daily, and is located in the MRI wing, Mulberry Street entrance.

October 4 – 6-8pm Mine By Design Studio in downtown Lenoir is offering a Paint Your Own Ceramic Pumpkin event – “Join us and paint this collection of ceramic harvest pumpkins and get them ready for your holiday decorating. Easy painting technique will make them colorful and you can use these year after year grouped together or separately. Purchase your pumpkins and the painting class is free. October 4 – jury in for Caldwell Arts Council’s Satie’s holiday Christmas show & sale – encourage new artists and crafters to bring items to jury in prior to 4pm on this date.

October 6 - The Duhks, (pronounced "ducks") are a quintet band from Winnipeg, Canada that plays a blend of Canadian soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old time country string band, zydeco, and Irish dance music. Their music draws heavily on all of the North America musical traditions, with a blue-grass based instrumentation, while successfully integrating Latin-music- influenced percussion. October 6-November 24 - The Bethlehem Branch Library's Exhibiting Artist Series will feature the encaustic works of award winning Bethlehem artist, writer and furniture designer Bud Caywood. The exhibition titled, "Encaustic / Ekphrastic: "A Waxing Poetic", beginning with an Opening Reception on Thursday October 6th from 5:30-7:00PM. The artist will speak about his work at 6:00 PM. The exhibition will feature all new art in Caywood's first solo exhibition since 2001. Paintings in encaustic techniques will include mixed mediums in acrylic, plaster, hand-made papers, fibers, photographs and natural materials in all disciplines. Many of the works will feature ekphrastic writings by regional authors.

October 7-9 – Oktoberfest in downtown Hickory featuring food, entertainment, local & regional music, and children’s activities, along with artisans be selling items such as pottery, jewelry, glass, fabrics, paintings and wood crafting, just to name a few. Remember, Christmas is just around the corner. October 7-16 – American Craft Week - The heritage of the mountains has created a vibrant community of artisans and made Western North Carolina a destination for American craft. October 9 – 3pm – FREE Concert, downtown Granite Falls featuring the US Air Force Langley Winds! For over 10 years, the Langley Winds have been inspiring audiences with a musical repertoire which includes a wide variety of popular, patriotic and chamber music. October 15, 7:30pm - Glenn Harman, a Lenoir native, who is a physician and pianist will return to play a concert with the Western Piedmont Symphony on October 15. Glenn grew up in Kentwood, was in the LHS band, and also studied piano. Because of his success as a physician at Mayo Clinic, he was inducted into the Caldwell County Education Hall of Fame. He will play the Grieg Piano Concerto, an audience favorite. He is dedicating the recital to Jean Bernhardt, his first piano teacher. Performing at J.E. November 4-19 – Hickory Community Theatre presents “God of Carnage” - God of Carnage is set in a gentrified section of Brooklyn where two married couples meet to sort out a playground fight between their sons. Michael and Veronica invite Alan and Annette, to their home to settle stuff. Civility crumbles. Grown-ups behave badly as these parents argue about who influenced their sons’ misbehavior. December 5, 2011 - The Appalachian Potters Market begins its twenty-fifth year with 66 potters under one roof. Each year, on the first Saturday in December, potters return to McDowell High School's commons area and gym transforming them into display and shopping spaces for potters and buyers from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Collectors and holiday shoppers will find a wide array of wares suitable to expand private collections as well as for holiday gift giving. Appalachian Potters Market provides an opportunity to see a variety of both traditional and modern claywork in one location. One can spend several hours browsing and chatting with the artisans about their work. Each year, visitors from throughout the country, as far away as Alaska, attend the Potters Market. Many styles of handcrafted claywork will be showcased at the 2010 Market, including Raku, sgraffito, decorative stoneware, earthen cookware, and traditional folk pottery. These styles are crafted as functional cooking and serving utensils, planters, lamps, jewelry, Christmas ornaments, decorative boxes, wall pockets, and aesthetically pleasing works of art. This year several new potters who are registered will join clayworkers participating in past years. Marion is located ten minutes north of I-40, one hour west of Hickory, 35 minutes east of Asheville, and 20 minutes south of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The main entrance to McDowell High School is located on Business Routes US 221and NC 226 North of Marion, and US 70 West of Marion. If using the US 221 Marion Bypass, exit at US 70, and travel west one mile to the High School/Junior High entrance on the left. Ample parking space, behind the school building, and handicapped access is available. There is a $4.00 admission fee for those over 16.
