Meeting with Susan

EGU Minutes—4/28/2017

Meeting with Susan:

WriPACA, sub-committee splits cut down to three (potentially two)—two reps makes more sense, ability to advocate, etc.—EGU reps on both existing sub- committees—there are two people who want to work with WriPACA and they’re already on the ballot—voted to make them both the reps.

Preceptorship—copied co-chairs on syllabus, policies are now transparent—but the curriculum is in place—so far we’ve only found out about this stuff after the fact— now that there’s transparency, we can inform new students and work with them— all the assistant directors are on the curriculum planning committee—how can we make the curriculum more fair? Co-chairs brought planning materials with potential solutions—in the future, Roberto can give them feedback on the process/the curriculum, more accountability—what about the lack of people from different fields (dominated by RCTE folks)? Overall, the meeting went well, diplomatic, everyone got to have the floor. Lit people want to teach to the learning objectives by using literary texts, Jayda clarified—it was a brainstorming session, positive discussion—we can keep pushing all of these ideas as we move forward. Perhaps making a report back to EGU part of the job requirement for directors? We can start organizing around at least knowing how they explain their decision-making process. We can also think about how to make our presence known at the F17 general meeting.

Mentorship statement—almost done, needs revisions based on meeting with Susan —meeting with Lee, told him about the statement so that he wasn’t blindsided— should we have him look at the language of the statement? It should not be a document that comes off as an attack. We’ll send it out, officially, right before the fall semester.

Deadline for EGU elections pushed back—one of the programs didn’t get the ballot until last night, so we need to give them more time. Pushed back to Monday, 4 pm.

CW rep report—questions about right-sizing—priority levels for right-sizing? Ranking system? This might continue to be an issue for CW students, so should we rethink the ranking system? Apparently EAL students never get right-sizing. Perhaps there could be research grants or something along those lines, Ander wants to find money to help students. Budget issues? Why did this happen? Reasoning for current system? Master’s vs. Ph.D.? It becomes complicated because the M.F.A. is a terminal degree. Why is there suddenly no money for right-sizing? Can we request past 5 years of right-sized percentages?

EAL—also, right-sizing issue—emailed program director, but position is switching hands—current director, Dwight, says climate survey over the summer to address grad student concerns. LIT—meeting on Friday the 5th, probably from 12-1. Lit semester’s end party happening at the Pink Hotel.

GLCC—nothing.

GPSC—last meeting on Monday. Woman introduced at Lit Shop won presidency.

RCTE--Department Forum on 4/28.
