Role Overview:

The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental and observational work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work. The Research Technician will join a large team investigating the ecological genetics of the Queensland fruit fly. Located in CSIRO Health & Biosecurity, the position will support research activities of the SITPlus program, a multi-institutional consortium that aims to combat the Queensland fruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni) through improving the Sterile Insect Technique. The program is co-funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia and CSIRO. The research technician position will involve assisting the development, optimisation, and running of bioassays to measure various fitness characteristics of Qfly. Molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR, electrophoresis and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing will also be used. The research technician will also be responsible for some general duties relating to fly husbandry, laboratory maintenance, procurement, record keeping etc. Duties and Key Result Areas:

 Assist in developing, testing, coordinating and executing bioassays.  Assist in the initiation of laboratory fly stocks from field collections.  Assist in rearing of fly stocks.  Assist in establishing isofemale strains of Qfly.  Assist in the prompt build-up of Qfly populations for experiments (e.g. bioassays).  Routine sampling of flies for morphological and molecular analyses.  Conduct basic molecular experiments and analyses.  General laboratory maintenance to ensure a safe, clean and tidy working environment.  Conduct laboratory induction and technical training for new staff and students.  Procure laboratory consumables and equipment.  Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.  Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under limited direction in support of scientific research.  Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.  Provide instruction on activities pertaining to the immediate work area and responsibilities, as required.  Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ ideas in support of existing and further research.  Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.  Other duties as directed.

Selection Criteria:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed Pre-Requisites: 1. Education/Qualifications: Relevant Bachelors, Honours/Masters degree in biology or related discipline. 2. Communication: Ability to communicate in a fluent and courteous manner, both orally and in writing, offering factual information supported by proven data, and providing appropriate feedback when required. 3. Adaptability: The ability to effectively manage a number of competing priorities simultaneously, and carry out non-routine tasks under general direction. 4. Problem Solving: Proven ability to investigate routine problems by identifying and considering the implications of a range of available alternative solutions. Essential Criteria: 1. Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory or research environment. 2. Demonstrated experience in experimental procedures, data collection and management. 3. Demonstrated ability to follow prescribed methods and protocols both written and verbal accurately and consistently. 4. Proven ability to work independently and as an effective team member. 5. Proficiency with MS Office and other software, including data management software. Desirable Criteria 1. Experience with insect husbandry. 2. Experience with genetic or molecular experiments.
