Reflection Statement

Catherine Richards and Nang Hom

Creating our minisite proved to have a number of hardships. From the technical side correct and validated mark up, tags, CSS properties including font, colour, alignment, etc., all had certain difficulties while as from team work its take time to get respond back from each other. We both found that face-to-face meetings is hard for us since we both are external students and working full time. We both agreed to use MSN and email as our communication tool. Using msn messenger we were able to make changes to our sites and transfer the file to get feedback from the other. It proved to be a most useful resource in the creation of our site.

The first problem encountered with our site was finding a way to link our topic into a single website and finding another person’s web page to add in the mini website. The first task for both of us is to come up agreement webpage format. We wanted our site to be easy to use/ view and so we spread the content out and used margins and centred the text to make it user friendly

We implement the “CRAP” principle when we designed the website.

Contrast: Sine the site is about information site, we avoid of using many colour in our website. We come up to use orange colour for the heading text and the banner colour. We decided to use different sizes and colours for the headings to get attention from the reader. We believe, the colours we used were neither too bright or too dull which made it easier on the eyes as the majority of our site is text.

Repetition: Repetition is one of the principles that require for the website. There was a great use for CSS, which make sure all the pages are using the same text properties and format which give the readers a continuous feeling throughout the site.

Alignment: We implement alignment principle to the creation of contrast for elements like bulleted lists or long quotes.

Proximity: The main idea of proximity principle is the items relating to each other should be grouped and closes together or the link to be follows up. We practice proximity to combine references in one page.

Once we satisfied with the format in CSS file, we used the CSS file to implement on the own page. We are responsible for own page such as page validation and to produce CSS code as required. Once we done our own page, we send file to each other for feedback. After that, we found out that it is difficult to merge CSS code into a single file and clean up unnecessary codes. Once we happy with CSS file we divided to develop for Computer Worms page, reference page and index home page. As from experience of creating the cascade a style sheet proved to be somewhat difficult, but was worth it in the end. Without CSS, our web pages appeared to be nothing more than text documents with no pizzazz. CSS certainly gives a web site that, but creating the CSS proved to be a daunting task.

Using the knowledge we had gained regarding colour schemes, we experimented with a different number of colours and created a colour scheme that has contrast and is reader friendly. Creating boxes that were different sizes for containing text proved difficult as it was hard to determine the size the containers should be, as well as using the

element in the appropriate areas. After trial and error both Nang and I had worked out a size that suited our headings and body as well as where the correct
codes were to go, and were pleased with the result.

After adding the

elements and other codes including images, our markup would not validate. We then realised we had some unclosed elements and soon fixed the problems.

Overall, we found that we worked well together. It took a lot of trial and error to work out how to position images on our site too. Because of the difficulty we faced in doing this we used only a limited number of images and managed to place them effectively on our site.
