Mission Statement: The mission of the Amherst County Public School Division is to provide an appropriate education in an environment that ensures success in the classroom and in future endeavors.
Departmental Policies and Procedures
Physical, Health and Driver Education are integral parts of the Amherst High School curriculum. We will provide for each student a program of activities designed to provide opportunities to develop an understanding of and appreciation for personal fitness and lifelong wellness.
I. DEPARTMENT STRUCTURE
A. Courses are divided into 9-week units. There are 36 weeks in the school year. Driver education will be thirteen and a half weeks and physical education is for twenty-two and a half weeks. B. Health Education I and II and Physical Education I and II are required for graduation. Health and physical education grades are not averaged together in determining the final semester grade. Thirty-six hours of classroom time must be devoted to Driver Education by each student, so attendance is very important. Behind the Wheel will be offered to 9 graders after the classroom part is passed in February.
C. At least once per 9 weeks, students will participate in the state recommended Fitnessgram Test Battery. These four tests include the following: mile run (cardiovascular endurance), curl-up (abdominal strength & endurance), sit & reach and trunk lift (flexibility), and the right-angle push-up (upper body strength & endurance). Student fitness will additionally be monitored and evaluated throughout the course using heart rate monitors, pedometers, and computer analysis.
