Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical and Poster Contests
2017 Theme “Hope for a Better Tomorrow”
The judging criteria for both speeches and posters are listed below. Speeches should relate to the theme and be no longer than three minutes in duration. Speech contestants will receive a maximum of ten (10) points in each category for a possible thirty (30) total points. Poster contestants will receive a maximum of five (5) points in each category for a possible (25) total points.
Oratorical 1. Content- the information is valid and related to the theme 2. Delivery- the student articulates thoughts clearly and with conviction 3. Student adheres to time limit Poster 1. Relation to Theme- theme is clearly conveyed through student’s art 2. Creativity/Originality- the poster is creative and original 3. Student uses authorized medium-paint, ink, lead, photo graphics, print lettering 4. Skillful- demonstrated skill level 5. Poster guidelines-(to be brought in by student on the day of the competition) . Should be submitted on standard poster board, not to exceed 22” x 28” . Should be flat, unfolded and unframed . Should have the student’s name, grade, and school on the back . May not be three-dimensional
Each school may submit only three (3) participants for the Oratorical Contest and only five (5) for the Poster Contest. The student application form is attached. Schools are expected to have preliminary contests in order to determine the top applicants from each category.
Each student who participates in the final contest on January 7th will receive a medal. The first place winners in each category will receive a trophy, as well as, a monetary award. Second and third place winners will receive trophies. The first place oratorical winners will present their speeches at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Program to be held on Sunday- January 15, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at Beulah First Baptist Church, where first place recipients in the poster competition will also have their posters on display. Additionally, all first place winners are expected to participate in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade to take place on Monday - January 16, 2017.
