As Biomedical Ethics team members, your role will be to explain the ethical implications of cloning on the scientific community. You are concerned with government regulation of cloning, and how any new laws might guide scientists in the future.

Your first job is to decide which group members will be responsible for each task. This is an important task. You will want to match your group member's strengths and resources to their role. (Example: A group member with PowerPoint access at home would be an excellent choice for the Presentation Engineer.)

Team Leader will be the main contact One person for the teacher

Writer will do most of the One person writing for the team. Access to a word- processing program at home is a good idea.

Presentation will create PowerPoint or One person Engineer media presentation, overheads and lecture notes.

Presenters All will present the team's All findings during the summit.

Internet All will find artifacts on All Research the Internet. It is helpful Team students have access to the Internet at home. It is very important that your team members keep their eyes on the main target question:

What government policy should be established to regulate cloning?

From the perspective of an expert in business investment, your vision of the ideal policy may be significantly different than an expert in agriculture. Identify what you believe is the single most important issue that the government should address in a cloning bill.

Example: What effect will cloning technology have on world population?

Now create "support questions" that you will need to investigate before the answer to the "big question" is clear.

Examples:

 How will embryonic stem cell research impact the treatment of spinal cord injury?  What, do you believe, are the current public values and beliefs that underlie embryonic stem cell research and might create a bias one way or the other on the value of cloning?

Brainstorm a list of the types of resources/information that you think would be useful to gain greater insight into embryonic stem cell research and cloning.

Below you will find several questions that you must answer. In addition, you will be asked to investigate the major issue that you identified in the previous activity.

Visit the cloning resources document to get a quick start on your investigation. You will be assessed on your information processing skills. You must:

 Use a variety of resources  Validate your resources  Expand beyond the cloning resources page  Synthesize the information  Seek accuracy in your work

For each of the questions below, you must attach at least one artifact.

Define biomedical ethics.

Regarding medical use: a) Explain possible negative aspects of organ cloning. b) What are the ethical issues associated with cloning? c) What are the benefits of cloning?

Explain how cloning could affect cultural diversity.

What are the implications of using cloning technology in infertility treatment?
