Course Title: Algebra 2 Assigned Text: Algebra; Pearson Prentice Hall; 2007 Supplemental Materials: PHSchool.com (Videos on lessons and practice quizzes and tests that correlate with the text.)

Brief Course Description: This course “complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of Alg. 1 and Geometry” (Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools). Major Emphasis is placed on learning basic families of functions, their properties, graphs, and algebraic methods, including inverse functions, for solving equations involving these functions. Students expand on their knowledge of polynomials (linear, quadratics, cubics, etc…), radical, exponential, logarithim, rational, and trigonometric functions. In addition, students expand upon their abilities to solve problems in a variety of content areas, including systems of equations and probability. Students entering Algebra 2 should already have basic knowledge and exposure of the basic properties of real numbers, simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions, solving one-variable equations and inequalities, and familiar with the graphing on the xy-coordinate plane.

The following percentage scale will determine letter grades: 90-100%  A 80-89%  B 65-79%  C 55-64%  D 0-54%  F 1. Course Grade A. Final Exam  15% B. Quizzes  15% C. Chapter Tests  35% D. Homework  25% E. Classwork  5% F. Class Participation  5%

A. Quizzes a. Quizzes cannot be made up. b. Student’s lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of semester. c. Students are required to save all quizzes in a portfolio (binder). d. Quiz dates will be posted in Edlio. B. Chapter Tests a. Chapter Tests are to be made-up, immediately following an absence (see Parent-Student Handbook page 17). b. Teacher will save all Chapter Tests. Semester 1 ‘15 Mr. Thomasson Algebra 2 Email: [email protected] c. Test dates will be posted in Edlio. C. Homework a. Homework will be assigned daily as necessary; it must include student’s name, first and last, period number, date of assignment, and page number(s) on the upper right hand corner of the first page. Points will be deducted if homework is not formatted correctly. b. Students are to complete all homework assignments to be successful in the course. Success in this course greatly depends on effort – showing all work neatly and carefully on all assignments, checking answers, and asking questions. c. Late homework, turned in by the day of the test, will receive at most half credit. d. If the student is absent the day an assignment is turned in, then the student must turn in the assignment along with the attendance slip. If a student is absent the day of instruction, then the student has an additional day(s) to make up that assignment(s). See homework make-up policy in Parent- Student handbook (page 17). e. Students are to save all homework in a portfolio with their Quizzes. D. Classwork a. Lesson notes with examples are to be included in the classwork. b. Classwork is to be stapled at the end of the student’s homework for the related sections covered. 2. Portfolio a. All Classwork, Homework, and Quizzes are to be kept in a 3-ring binder that is divided into sections accordingly. 3. Extra Credit a. Extra credit problems will sometimes be included in a quiz or a test. 4. Block Schedule a. On Block Schedule days students will attend three periods on Block A and four periods on Block B instead of seven. On some block days, students will have two lessons and will be expected to complete two assignments: one in class (Classwork) and one at home (Homework). 5. Extra Help a. Extra help from the teacher is available during the second half of lunch on designated week days. 6. Cheating a. A student found cheating on a quiz or Test will receive 0 points for that Quiz or Test and a “U” (unsatisfactory) for the conduct grade. 7. Conduct Grade a. Conduct grade will be lowered one letter grade for each referral to the deans Semester 1 ‘15 Mr. Thomasson Algebra 2 Email: [email protected] b. Frequent classroom disruptions will cause conduct grade to be lowered. c. All students are required to be positive participants in classroom activities. 8. Materials a. Student is responsible for bringing the textbook and a calculator (a TI- 30X IIS calculator is highly recommended; cost is less than $20) to every class session along with pencil and paper. Students cannot share calculators. The student must have his own calculator so that he can learn how and when to use it. Please note, graphing/graphics calculators will not be allowed during quizzes, tests, or finals and they are not to be brought to class.

9. Objectives

The main purpose of Algebra 2 is to review/introduce/ expand on students’ knowledge of particular basic families of functions (Polynomial, Exponential, Radical, and Trigonometric.) For all of the Families studied, students will learn:

- The basic parent function both in terms of its graph and algebraic expression, with an emphasis placed on understanding a function’s domain and range. - The common and standard forms of the parent function - How to identify/Find key components of the parent function, including zeros, intercepts, asymptotes, and any symmetries - How to manipulate algebraic expressions to create various graphical transformations (including vertical/horizontal reflections, translations and stretching) - Use algebraic methods for solving equations/inequalities involving each function - How to find the inverse relation/function of each family.
