Tutor Biographies

Rhoda Abel I have been involved with GP appraisal since 2003 both as GP appraiser and Primary Care Lead Appraiser in Forth Valley, including involvement in appraiser training and development over this time. I was a GP in a 3-partner practice for 30 years and vocational trainer for 20 until I left in Summer 2015. Since then I have been working as a GP locum across a variety of practices across Forth Valley and have now just retired from clinical practice.

Fraz Ansari I have a fairly broad background in general surgery and am now focusing on colorectal surgery. I work at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy in Fife. I have a keen interest in teaching and am involved in teaching undergraduate students and post graduate trainees i.e. foundation year doctors. Having been involved in medical appraisals for the past few years, I have developed a keen interest in the area since it appears central to maintaining high quality of service.

John Ballantyne (Awaiting entry)

Alexandra Baxter I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1993. After completing paediatric training in Edinburgh and Australia I was appointed to my current post as a consultant in Paediatric Neurodisability in 2007 at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children Edinburgh. My particular interests are in Acquired Brain Injury Rehab and Cerebral Palsy management. I have been an Appraiser since 2009, and an Appraiser Tutor since 2015.

Audrey Brown Graduated from Glasgow University in 1990, and trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with subspecialty training in community gynaecology. I have been a consultant in sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) at Sandyford in Glasgow since 2014. I have been involved with the Faculty of SRH of RCOG, as chair of the Clinical Effectiveness Committee, and then in the Curriculum Group to establish SRH as a new speciality. I am currently clinical lead for SRH. I have been an appraiser since 2006, and currently appraise both consultant and SAS colleagues.

Malcolm Bruce Graduated Aberdeen 1980. MRCPsych London 1984. PhD Institute of Psychiatry 1989. Further experience in Oxford prior to getting a Consultant post from 1994 to 2014, working in a Community Drug and Alcohol Problem Service in Edinburgh. Working with doctors with Addiction and Psychiatric problems since Item 3

1995, appointed by the GMC as an associate providing assessment and supervision of doctors who have undertakings on their registration, and am now a trainer for new associates. I have been an active BMA member and was Deputy Chair, then Chair, of NHS Lothian LNC from 2004 to 2014. I remain in active practice as a Medical Member of the Mental Health Tribunal Service.

Niall Cameron Since 1986 I have been a GP in a teaching practice in Govan. I have been an appraiser since 2003 and became NES National Appraisal Adviser in 2007. In this role I work with the appraisal team to quality assure appraisal, including ensuring that the training and support of appraisers meets the highest standards. I have contributed to the development of UK standards for appraisal and appraiser training and have contributed to a number of publications in this area. I am also involved in consultation skills teaching for a range of health professionals, and have an interest in medical law and ethics.

Morag Campbell I trained in Paediatrics and Neonatology in Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Canada. I have worked as a Consultant Neonatolgist in Canada, at Evelina Children’s Hospital in London where I was Head of the Neonatal Service, and since 2011 in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde where I am currently Clinical Director for Paediatric Critical Care and Neonatology. I am passionate about the role of appraisal in professional development and have been an active consultant appraiser in secondary care since 2006.

Lucy Carrick Having trained in Psychiatry in Edinburgh, I came back to Glasgow to take up post as a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist working in East Renfrewshire. I worked there for over 8 years before moving to my current post as Consultant in Rehabilitation Psychiatry at Gartnavel Royal Hospital. I have an MBA and an interest in management. I have been interested in the Appraisal process since I was appointed and became an Enhanced Appraiser in around 2012. I enjoy Appraising and was keen to develop this further. I underwent the Appraisal trainer course in 2015 and have enjoyed tutoring on appraisal courses since.

Katie Clark I am a salaried GP within NHS prison healthcare as well as Out of Hours in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. I have an interest in palliative care and provide on-call cover for my local hospice as well as working within my HSCP as a GP Palliative Care Facilitator. I became a GP Appraiser in 2008 and currently undertake around 63 appraisals a year.

Phil Davies I graduated from Cambridge University in 1996 and subsequently went on to train in Respiratory Paediatrics in Manchester as well as completing an M.D. in Cardiff Item 3

University. Since 2008 I have worked as a consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine in the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow and I am now the Clinical Director for the Medical Specialties in the Children’s Hospital. I have been an appraiser for over five years and am currently appraisal lead for the Women and Children’s Directorate in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Rosemary Dixon I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1978. Initially I worked in Medical Paediatrics and trained in Edinburgh, Toronto and Adelaide. In 1988 I made the change to General Practice and have worked in this discipline since. Currently I am a part time General Practitioner in Edinburgh with a special interest in Diabetes. I became involved with GP Appraisal in 2003 and I have conducted more than 450 GP appraisals since then. After two years as Deputy LAA I was appointed Local Appraisal Adviser for Lothian and Borders in 2012. I strongly believe that doctors are best served by a formative appraisal and that this can be combined with the requirements of Revalidation.

Victoria Dobie At present I am an Associate Specialist in Orthopaedics and Trauma at the Borders General Hospital. My experience in teaching and training has included Clinical and Educational Supervisor roles, directing the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course in the Borders for 11 years, and teaching on ATLS Faculty training courses in London. I have a role as Educational Advisor for SAS Doctors in the Borders, working for the NES Project for the development of SAS doctors. Having been a trained appraiser since 2012, I took up the post of Secondary Care Appraisal Lead in the Borders in 2016.

Eddie Doyle I am a consultant paediatric anaesthetist in Edinburgh and an Associate Medical Director with responsibility for Women’s and Children’s Services. I have been an appraiser since 2005 and in 2011 became the Secondary Care Appraisal Lead for NHS Lothian.

Edward Dunstan Life journey started in East Africa, and from there schooling in Devonshire and University in London. Qualified from Kings College Hospital in 1993, completed my Basic Surgical Training in SW Thames and Higher Surgical Training NE Thames. My Fellowship year was spent studying lower limb Arthroplasty, Minimally Invasive Surgery and I have since developed an interest in Enhanced recovery (for which I am Orthopaedic lead in Fife). Saw the light and headed North into ‘The Kingdom’ to be appointed Orthopaedic Consultant in 2007. Currently Director of Surgery in NHS Fife and Appraisal Lead for Secondary Care.

I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1981. After starting training in paediatrics, I spent 6 years working in East Africa and then came back to Britain to train in Paediatric Neurology. I have been a consultant in paediatric neurology in Edinburgh since 1996. My particular interest is in the management of cerebral palsy. I have sat on a number of NICE clinical guidelines committees including cerebral palsy, premature labour and assessment of neurological problems.

I am Clinical Director for medical paediatrics in Lothian Health Board. I have been appraising since 2007, and an appraisal tutor since 2011.

Lorna Fleming I have worked as a GP in Fife since 1990. I was a Specialty Doctor in Dermatology at the Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy from 1994 until 2012. I have been a GP Appraiser since 2005 and am a GP mentor. I have been a long-time member of the Local Medical Committee, and have been Treasurer of Fife LMC since 2014.

Barry Gibson-Smith I graduated at Glasgow University in 1994 and have been a GP Principal at Anniesland Medical Practice in Glasgow since 2001. I have an interest in Dermatology and on completion of the Cardiff Diploma, worked as a GPwSI in Dermatology until 2011. I have been a GP trainer since 2011 and have an interest in undergraduate medical teaching with experience in 2nd and 3rd year GP placements. I have been a GP Appraiser since 2002.

Una Graham I have been a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry since 2005, working in South Glasgow. I have held the role of Lead Clinician since 2008 leading to my interest in appraisal. I have an interest in clinical ethics and I am a member of the Yorkhill Hospital Clinical Ethics Forum. I am currently studying for a doctorate in Medical Ethics at Keele University. I completed my undergraduate training at Glasgow University in 1996 and joined the West of Scotland Training Scheme in Psychiatry in 2007. I completed a Masters in Medical Law and Ethics at Glasgow University in 2003.

Krystyna Gruszecka I qualified from Edinburgh in 1981 and after GP training went on to spend 21 years as a GP in Possilpark in Glasgow. While there I was a GP Trainer and also did sessions in Family Planning and Psychosexual Medicine as well as latterly working at the Health Board in relation to service development. I was a GP Appraiser in Glasgow for 3 years and then, having moved to a rural post (Isle of Arran) in 2006, I restarted performing appraisals in 2010 for Ayrshire and Arran. Since “retirement”, I have been working as a locum, doing some work for the Tribunal Service, GP Appraisals, medical reports for clients of Freedom from Torture and some voluntary medical work out in Malawi. Item 3

Ivan Hanna I am a Dundee graduate. I have been a consultant ophthalmologist in Ayrshire & Arran since 1995, and a college tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists 2002-2008. I have been involved with appraisal since 2003, and a NES appraiser since 2012.

Andrew Harvey I graduated from the University of Dundee in 2000 and undertook training in anaesthesia in the West of Scotland. I was appointed as a consultant in Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 2012. In a slight reversal of the normal process, in 2015 I was asked to become lead for appraisal for North Sector within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, then I became an appraiser in 2016 before undertaking training as an appraisal tutor in 2017.

Richard Holmes Graduated from Glasgow University in 1999. Since 2005 I have been a GP working in Dumfries and Galloway. I undertake sessional work in the area and have been a GP Appraiser in Dumfries and Galloway since 2011. I undertake approximately 40 Appraisals per year.

Peter Kiehlmann I've worked as a Portfolio GP since February 2016:- GP Locum, Appraiser, Medical Student Tutor & Medical Adviser, Adoption & Fostering, NHS Grampian. Medical Member of Tribunal Service. Member of NHS Grampian LMC, GP Subcommittee and Area Medical Committee. Previously was GP Principal in Aberdeen for 25 years, GP Trainer & Medical Student Tutor for 20 years. Qualified Dundee 1981 and did self-constructed GP Scheme in Dundee, Dorset and Dingleton Hospital in Melrose. Worked in Mission Hospital on the Kenya/Uganda border, before 5 years as GP Principal in 12-partner practice in Reading. I like paddling folding kayaks, cycling folding bicycles, dog walking & bird-watching [but not all at the same time!]

Kathy Leighton I was a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Lead Clinician with Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board based in Greenock. I was involved in post-graduate medical education as West of Scotland Deanery Specialty Advisor for Mental Health (all specialties) 2006-09, and Training Programme Director in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I have participated in appraisal within my Health Board and with NHS Education for Scotland for some years and have experience of appraising and providing appraisal training to consultants, doctors in training and specialty doctors in mental health. My additional roles include Departmental Specialty Advisor in Child and Adolescent Mental Health for Scottish Government and Chair of the Child and Adolescent Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland. I am Deputy Chair of the RCPsych Equivalence Committee and Psychiatric Support Service. Item 3

Hilary MacPherson I am currently working part time as a consultant in obstetrics & gynaecology with NHS Orkney, having worked in Forth Valley until 2016. An appraiser since 2003, I became an appraiser tutor in 2016. I also have an MSc in quality improvement and have completed training in business coaching.

Alice McGrath I graduated from Glasgow University in 1985 and initially trained in general practice and worked for a short time as a principal in general practice. I retrained in psychiatry, and since 2004 have been a consultant in child & adolescent psychiatry in NHS Lanarkshire. I have been involved in appraisals since 2008 and did the enhanced appraiser training in 2012. I also have an interest in post- graduate medical education and am a named clinical supervisor for core psychiatry trainees, and named educational supervisor for higher trainees in child & adolescent psychiatry. I am the national TPD for higher training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry and am Scottish representative on the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty Education and Curriculum Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I am also involved in mentoring new psychiatrists.

Derek McHardy MBChB FRCGP MRCP I graduated in Aberdeen in 1980. I worked in medicine for a few years before completing GP training. I spent 1988-95 in Pakistan, mainly working at a remote mission hospital. On return to the UK I spent 18 months as an associate GP in two practices in rural Aberdeenshire, before joining an Aberdeen practice in 1997. My first involvement with GP appraising was at its inception in 2003. Since 2004 my clinical work has been for the Grampian Out of Hours service. I'm also an undergraduate tutor for Aberdeen University.

Helen Morrow I am an Associate Specialist in Geriatric Medicine in Lanarkshire with a particular interest in end of life care and anticipatory care planning. I have been a member of the Scottish Short Life Working groups for palliative care in the acute hospital and the national DNACPR policy. I trained as an advanced communication skills facilitator and am lead tutor for communication skills workshops in NHS Lanarkshire. I am involved in undergraduate, postgraduate and multi professional teaching. I have been an appraiser since 2012.

David Mowle I have been a consultant neurosurgeon at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee since 2000. More recently I've taken on the role of Associate Medical Director for Professional Governance and secondary care appraisal lead for NHS Tayside. I've always enjoyed being an appraiser, especially meeting colleagues who practise in fields completely different to my own and learning about the joys and Item 3 challenges of their work. I have a particular interest in supporting colleagues who are experiencing professional difficulties.

Robin Munro I graduated from Aberdeen University in 1989. I trained in Newcastle, Aberdeen and Glasgow before being appointed as a Consultant Rheumatologist in Lanarkshire in 1999. I have particular interests in the management of metabolic bone diseases and spondyloarthropathies. I have been involved in Undergraduate Education for a number of years and am the Hospital Sub-Dean for Glasgow University and a Deputy Director of Medical Education. I have been an appraiser since 2008.

Liz Murphy I graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow 1985 having done an intercalated degree in Immunology. I was appointed in 1994 as Consultant Rheumatologist at Law Hospital to a newly established post and I have seen the service develop so that Lanarkshire now has a comprehensive area-wide service with additional subspecialty provision. I have a particular interest in paediatric and adolescent Rheumatology and spent a sabbatical as Visiting Specialist at the BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver Canada in 2001.

I have a strong commitment to medical training and have held a number of posts in postgraduate education. I am currently Associate Postgraduate Dean for career development in the west region. My other professional interests include quality improvement and clinical standards. I graduated with distinction as MSc in Clinical Leadership in December 2010. My dissertation examined the role of processes and outcome measures in quality improvement, and I continue to be actively involved in quality improvement work in Rheumatology in Scotland. I am an Examiner and Host for MRCP (UK) PACES and Chair of MRCP (UK) Scenario Editorial Committee.

Janice Oliver I am a GP in Glasgow, an appraiser and the Local Appraisal Adviser for Greater Glasgow & Clyde. I have been involved with GP appraisal since the start in 2003. I am also an Associate Advisor for CPD at NES, West Deanery, supporting the development of sessional GPs. This involves delivering workshops on how to prepare for appraisal and revalidation. My interests include developing the skills of established appraisers and ensuring the quality of the appraisal process. This involves national "further intensive training" courses, local educational sessions for appraisers and also an annual performance appraisal for the 40 GP appraisers in the Glasgow and Clyde area. I have been involved as a tutor for both primary and secondary care appraisal training courses.

I am working as a GP in Fife and am also a GP appraiser and Local Appraisal Adviser for Fife. I have been doing this for a good number of years now and still very much enjoy this. I have been a tutor on the GP appraiser training course a good number of years as well as having been a tutor on further intensive skills courses for GPs. I am very interested in communication skills overall, and especially in relation to appraisal and revalidation.

Janice Provan I have been Staff Grade/Specialty Doctor in Otolaryngology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary since 1995. I have been involved in Appraisal since 2003 and I am now Secondary Care Appraisal Co-Lead for Grampian. I trained as an Appraiser Tutor as I wanted to contribute to a system that aims to deliver high, consistent levels of medical appraisal, no matter what your specialty or grade is, or where you live in Scotland. I am an advocate of cross-specialty appraisal and I enjoy hearing of other people’s appraisal and appraising experiences: there’s always something to learn.

Anne Ramsay Graduated Dundee University 1983, MRCGP 1987, FRCGP 1997. Appraiser and Local Appraiser Adviser in Tayside since 2003. I have been involved in interview selections, appraisal training courses and performance management appraisals since the start. I continue to appraise and have over 500 appraisals under my belt. Having worked as a full-time partner in a busy central Dundee Practice, with special interests in Women’s Health and Cardiovascular Medicine for 26 years, I resigned my post in June 2015. I undertook regular locum work in a 2c practice until 31/03/17. Since then I have been working as a salaried GP to the OOH service in Tayside. I also have responsibility for making recommendations to the GMC regarding revalidation for primary care doctors in Tayside.

Andreas Rogowski After graduating from Humboldt University Berlin in 1996 I started anaesthetic training in Germany. In 2004 I moved to the UK, joining the anaesthetic department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff as a Locum Consultant. I was appointed to my current post as Consultant Anaesthetist at Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy in 2006. I have a particular interest in Medical Education as a Clinical/Educational Supervisor for anaesthetic trainees and most recently as College Tutor. At the end of 2012 I started as a NES trained appraiser.

David Simpson Graduate of Bristol University 1979. Trained in surgery and then ENT, principally in Glasgow, from 1979 to1989. Appointed as a Consultant in the Royal Air Force in 1989. In December 1995 appointed as a Consultant in ENT at Stobhill Item 3

Hospital. Currently a full time ENT Consultant specialising in Otology and Rhinology Day Surgery.

Kate Slaven I have been a GP partner and GP Trainer in Paisley. I was trained and appointed as an appraiser and Local Appraisal Adviser in 2003, currently looking after appraisal in Argyll and Bute for NHS Highland. I have been involved in tutoring on appraiser training courses and further skills courses, and run taster courses for prospective appraisers. I am particularly interested in communication between doctors and patients and have tutored on communication skills courses for GP trainees, established general practitioners, and one for emergency medicine trainees in secondary care. I like to run and to orienteer.

Robyn Smith I am a consultant anaesthetist working in the Heart and Lung centre at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, trained in enhanced appraisal in 2011, and am now part of the NES enhanced appraisal tutor team.

Ian Staples Having worked as a Community Development and Youth Worker in London in the 1980s, I went on to train as a therapeutic counsellor at the University of East London. I worked as a counsellor of students at Universities in London and Edinburgh throughout the 1990s. I became involved in teaching counselling and counselling skills and worked as training manager with Couple Counselling Scotland from 2002 – 2006. I joined NES as Development Manager for GP Appraisal in 2006 and was responsible for the development of the NES Medical Appraisal training courses. I moved on from NES after nine years in July 2015. I now work on a freelance basis. I have a longstanding interest in experiential approaches to communication skills development and individual growth.

Agnes Struthers I have been an appraiser since 2010 [doing 30 appraisals per year] and have held the lead GP appraisal post in NHS Highland since early 2016. I have recently changed my work pattern from a partner in a practice to a sessional GP who also does forensic physician work.

John Taylor Secondary Care Appraisal Lead for NHS Ayrshire & Arran since 2008. Half time General Adult Psychiatrist and half time Associate Medical Director for Mental Health Services since 2007. Mentoring Lead for the RCPsych in Scotland since 2015. Previously Educational/Clinical Supervisor for core and higher trainees. I have always enjoyed training and development and see being an Appraisal Tutor as a natural extension of this interest.

Alistair Todd Item 3

Qualified Dundee 1981, MRCP 1984 and FRCR 1987. Have worked as an interventional and diagnostic radiologist in the Highlands for 25 years, with just a few years left. I have enjoyed a diversity of roles in this time as clinical director, chair of the LNC, secondary care appraisal lead in Highland and now head of service. I am a supporter of Revalidation based on appraisal and find appraisal work interesting, rewarding and certainly challenging.

Peter Wilkes Qualified in 1983 from Glasgow Medical School. I undertook training for general practice in the Central Belt and in Highland before settling into a career in general practice based in Drumnadrochit near Inverness. During the past 10 years my career has become increasingly diverse, and I previously had the following roles – Appraisal Adviser (and appraiser) for NHS Highland and the Western Isles, Coordinator of the GP Rural Fellowship Training Scheme for NES, Mindfulness based CBT Facilitator for NHS Highland and of course part time GP. I have been involved with the Scottish General Practice Appraisal Scheme since its inception in 2003 and am increasingly involved in the training of appraisers for that scheme. At the last count I have completed well over 300 appraisals.
