I. Fire A. If you Discover a Fire: 1. If you discover a fire or smoke situation, activate the fire alarm pull station and call, or have someone call, Duke Public Safety at 911. Give them the location (“TUNL Building” on Duke West Campus - - building number 67). If you use your cell phone to call 911 for help you must let them know you are on Duke campus and what Building you are in. Physics is building 49 and TUNL is building 67.

2. If you feel comfortable doing so, use a fire extinguisher to control or extinguish the fire while emergency personnel are on the way to your location. If you cannot contain or extinguish the fire leave the building immediately.

B. What to do When the Fire Alarm Sounds:

LAB 1. Shut down all major electrical equipment, but leave overhead lighting ON. This can be accomplished quickly on an emergency basis by throwing all circuit breakers painted red on mezzanine level (see figure 1.1). Do not throw unpainted breakers as these interrupt lighting, which will be needed. Follow the Emergency Shutdown procedures in this document for all running equipment unless you feel you are in danger.

Office

Stuff towels, sheets or similar materials under all doors leading into corridors. Open a window slightly and hang some light colored material out the window to get the attention of emergency personnel. Stay close to the floor if smoke enters the room.

3. If conditions allow you to leave the room, close, but do not lock the door and walk directly to the nearest exit and leave the building.

4. If you are away from your room when the alarm sounds, do not return to your room, but leave the building via the nearest exit.

5. DO NOT use elevators. If hallways and/or exit stairwells are not accessible because of heavy smoke, return to your room, close the door and follow the instructions given in (2) above.

6. If you have exited the facility, stand clear of the building. Emergency apparatus may be maneuvering around the building. Assemble on the far side of the parking lot next to physics and determine whether anyone is left inside the building by querying your colleagues and notify the Fire Department of any missing people.

2018 年 5 月 8 日 Emergency Procedures 1.2 7. Follow the directions of fire and police personnel and NEVER re-enter the building until they give permission to do so.

8. Notify the laboratory director.

2018 年 5 月 8 日 Emergency Procedures 1.3 C. Description of Fire Alarm System

The TUNL building has a state of the art fire alarm system, installed in 2001, which protects all areas of the building. The detectors are mounted on the ceiling and are largely smoke detectors. Heat sensors are used in the LAB area due to possible pump oil smoke. The main control panel is located on the entry level near the front door. The Fire Safety Office should be contacted to disable detectors in any area where welding will be performed in order to prevent false alarms (684-5609)

1. Audio and visual alarms will alert building occupants even in the event of a power loss. 2. The main air circulation system for the control room, accelerator bay, target rooms, computer room, and office structure will all shut down automatically. 3. An alarm rings in campus Police headquarters. 4. The campus Police watch will immediately dispatch Duke Public Safety officers to investigate the alarm. The Durham Fire Department will be dispatched unless Duke Public Safety cancels the call within a few minutes. 5. Public Safety and University maintenance personnel who are qualified to restart the air conditioning system will accomplish turning off the alarm after the accident or emergency.

II. MEDICAL EMERGENCY

1. Major Medical Emergency - - Potentially Life Threatening

In case of a serious medical emergency call 911 (Duke Public Safety) to request help. Give them the location (Nuclear Building on Duke West Campus - - building number 67) and the nature of the emergency. If it is after hours you may need to arrange to have the front door open or unlocked to permit entrance by emergency personnel.

If you need immediate assistance and are alone, page the TUNL and Physics buildings by calling 660-2585 and requesting help. (Note: you may have to go open the front door to let people in.) NOTIFY TUNL DIRECTOR.

2018 年 5 月 8 日 Emergency Procedures 1.4 If you use your cell phone to call 911 for help you must let them know you are on Duke campus and what Building you are in. Physics is building 49 and TUNL is building 67.

2. Minor Accidents - Cuts, Burns

Persons injured on the job should be taken to Duke Hospital (Emergency Room) for treatment if they request it or if the injury appears serious enough to warrant it. NOTIFY TUNL DIRECTOR. An accident report must be completed within 24 hours of the accident.

For minor cuts and burns - not requiring professional medical attention, there are four first aid boxes located on the TUNL laboratory level. #1 BY THE BATHROOM DOOR (grid location E3) #2 ON WALL OPPOSITE LEBAF (grid location C4) #3 ON WALL NEAR SECOND 90 DEG. ANALYZING MAGNET (C10) #4 ON WALL NEAR THE ENGE SPLIT POLE SPECTROGRAPH (C13)

First aid boxes are also located in the following areas: THE EVAPORATOR ROOM (PHYSICS BLDG. RM.038) THE ELECTRONICS SHOP (PHYSICS BLDG. RM. 01)

These boxes should contain disinfectant, burn ointment, gauze bandages, tape, scissors, eyewash, cold packs, sting kill swabs, and Band-Aids. Refills can be obtained from Patrick Mulkey in 04 Physics. Please notify Patrick Mulkey of any first aid supplies needing replacement.
