1. Update: PLO revisions – General Studies in Natural Sciences - by end of April (Steve): This is planned for the summer, considering the scope of the work; Steve expects to finish by June 30. 2. Update: Department has been reminded of SLO calendar (Steve): We will have a department meeting on Flex Day and will spend time addressing the SLO calendar and requirements then. 3. Update: Life Science program review requests (Mike, Par): As part of the program review, $1500 has been requested in additional funds for Bio 5, along with a part-time lab tech and full-time Environmental Science instructor and General Biology instructor positions; Par also submitted a request for a full-time senior administrative assistant and a full-time faculty position for CNA/HHA/HOC. These will be reviewed in the Fall, as budget requests needs to wait for FY 2017. Steve recommends that in the future the faculty read over the program review to potentially provide more feedback before being officially submitted. 4. Completed: working hours per week devoted to the garden (Nadine & Mike): Nadine reports that student workers only need to water for a half hour 2-3x a week; the garden set-up is designed for it to need minimal work and be self-sustaining. New Business: 13. AP Biology – LAMC credit (Par): AP Bio exam currently only provides credit for Bio 3 at LAMC, but in CSU and UC the AP exam gives credit to majors courses lectures, but not labs – so the department has decided to leave it as is, because AP students don’t have the lab experience. 14. PLO assessments for BIO & HS (Par): Steve will coordinate with faculty and put together an assessment for the two programs before August 1. 15. Life Sciences Open House to families to generate student support (Par): Par proposes to hold the event within the first few weeks of the semester, once per semester. It will be a bilingual event that encourages students to bring their families to see what they are doing in the classroom, discuss possible career paths, and promote internships. 16. Student help needed in the summer (Nadine): Given the funds at the start of the FY, one student will be hired to help with equipment for 10 hours a week, starting July 1 – August when the new semester begins. Nadine will work with Pong on the PCR for this student. Nadine asked also for 5 hours/week help with the Bio 3 lab(4 days/week) setups and cleanups and was turned down. Students are responsible for properly cleaning their lab station, which needs to be enforced by instructors. Nadine will find a video of how to properly clean lab stations and supplies; this will be shown by the instructors at the start of the semester to lab students along with the safety video. 17.
