Dear Salish Ponds Families,

I hope you are back into the groove now that the snow days are past us. It was nice last week to have a five-day week. Our students need to be in school. As it is, Oregon has their students attend school fewer days than many of the other states in the country. In fact, we are near the bottom. We cannot afford to miss the 9 days we did and expect our students to be competitive with others.

We will make up most of those days, but it has not been announced yet. The District Administration, the Teacher Union, and the Reynolds School Board are currently negotiating and will soon arrive at a solution. Once the Board approves the plan, it will be communicated out to the school community. Currently, there have been some changes to the calendar that have been communicated. Please be sure to check the District Website to see the changes.

Please check our calendar of events. There are many things coming up that you should be aware of. My highlight is the first annual school dance on February 27th. I hope to see you all there.

Thank you for trusting Salish Ponds with your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Title 1 Federally Funded School

*Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather. We have noticed that some children are not wearing coats on cold, rainy days. *Vomit, fever, and diarrhea are reasons to keep your student home. They need to be symptom free 24 hours without medication before returning to school.

The Winter Session of SUN is under way and going great! We have lots of exciting enrichment opportunities for students, including a new STEAM class, Oregon Battle of the Books, and Chess Club, all taught by our school day teachers. We also offer a strong Student Leadership Group, a Baseball Class offered by Friends of Baseball, Basketball, Arts and Crafts, Circus and Performing Arts, Environmental Science, and Dance Fusion. Communication for the Spring Session of SUN will go out to families in March.

Chess Tournament: Our students will participate in the Chess for Success Regional Tournament Saturday, February 4th at Lynch Wood Elementary School, 8:30-11:30 am.

Box Tops for Education Update: The winning classroom is Mr. Pinkston’s 3rd grade class with 322 box tops! They have earned popcorn party! (Mrs. Huerta’s kinder class came in in second place.) Salish students collected a total of 1,121 box tops this round! That equals $112.10 to help our school buy art supplies, fund field trips and other activities. Keep bringing them in!

Counselor

Hello Salish Ponds Families!

Our PBIS school expectations are: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Do Your Best. This year our PBIS program is focusing on celebrating our classroom communities. Each classroom will get to have one pizza party this year to celebrate doing great work as a classroom community.

During our PBIS assembly on January 27th, Mr. Pinkston's 3rd grade class showed a video they made about their class being responsible in December and January and Ms. Walker's 4th grade class recited the poem 'The Road Not Taken' by Robert Frost (which they recite daily in class).

Ms. Brand's 3rd grade class led the school in singing our updated Salish Ponds school song, along with the help of Mr. Foster on guitar. We also noted that our new 'Kindness Tree' that is in the front hall of the school is already blooming with wonderful kindness shouts written by staff, students, and parents!

We also showed a video the 1st graders made to highlight our February focus skill of 'do your best'.

Our next assembly is Friday February 24th at 8:30 and we will be highlighting our focus skill of 'do your best'. We encourage you to talk to your children about what it means to 'do your best', here are some examples we will highlight at the assembly: -Doing your best mean continuing with something even when it is difficult, which is also called perseverance!

-Doing your best as a friend means being kind and including others!

-Doing your best at school means working hard and putting in extra effort!

-Doing your best while playing cooperative games in PE and at recess means you work together with your teammates to play fair and encourage each other!
