SEASON REVIEW 2016

JUNIOR LEAGUE

For the second season in a row, we once again competed in Division 1. As always in this Division, we started the season with the aim of avoiding relegation and securing medals in as many age groups as possible. As you will see, we won 2 and lost 3 galas, thus securing a third consecutive season in the top division. The last gala of the season versus Flixton was a relegation decider and you will see we won by just 1 point in an excellent contest.

RESULTS (before pts were adjusted) Mar 1st Away to Ramsbottom lost 53-50 swimmer of match Sam Doherty Apr 28th Away to Tyldesley lost 54-50 swimmer of match Dylan Fung May 12th Home to Atherton & Leigh lost 57-49 swimmer of match Robyn Kilbourne Jun 21st Home to Radcliffe won 62-43 swimmer of match Amber Webster Sep 15th Home to Flixton won 54-53 swimmer of match Sam Doherty

On the Central Lancs Website, the results of these galas have been adjusted due to many teams falling foul of registration errors. These scores noted above are the actual scores on the night.

We achieved medals in the following events:

JOINT WINNERS – 14 BOYS: Just 3 points dropped all season Ryan Coulthard, Kian Tevlin, Harry Finn, Sam Doherty and Rory Lees

WINNERS – 14 MIXED: All the 14/u Boys pick up a second medal as this team drop just 4 points during the season Tegan Shaw, Robyn Kilbourne, Jessica O Neill, Olivia Bell, Sam Doherty, Rory Lees, Kian Tevlin, Harry Finn and Ryan Coulthard

As you can see in the table below, the 12/u Mixed and 16/u Boys also did very well

In the age groups: Girls (max 15) Boys(max 15) Mixed(max 15) Total(max 45) 10/u 3 wins 7 wins 4 wins 14 wins 12/u 6 wins 7 wins 12 wins 25 wins 14/u 4 wins 13 wins 13 wins 30 wins 16/u 6 wins 10 wins 7 wins 23 wins

Once again the Boys win this year’s head to head 37 to 19. It is now 17 years since the Girls won more races than the Boys.

On the next page is the list of all swimmers who competed in the Junior League during the season. Looking at the 2015 list, excluding those too old for the Junior League we had 10 swimmers who did not feature this year and 11 swimmers new to the competition, compared to 10 swimmers who left and 18 who were new last year. So a much more stable team which certainly helped in our achievement in staying in Division 1. We also had the same number of swimmers who competed (43 in total). Attendance – In an improvement from last year, we had 29 swimmers (named above) who competed in all five Gala’s. (Last year there were just 23) For each gala there was an average of just over 2 swimmers absent, which was one of the best we have ever had. There is no doubt that good attendance contributed to staying in Division 1 for a further season, so thank you to all.

Final Season – It was the final year in the Junior League for Ben L, Mitchell O N, Matthew S and Oonagh M

JUNIOR LEAGUE WINS

Since the start of the 1997 season, we have a record kept of the total number of Junior League wins for each swimmer who has competed for the club. Four of the top ten still compete for the club & six of these swimmers have been awarded the Swimmer of the Year. There are no new entries on this list this year, but Hannah added another 10 wins. Hannah is still eligible to swim in the Junior League for another year and will no doubt be looking to overtake Joseph and Daniel in 2017.

IN OTHER COMPETITIONS

JUBILEE

The format of the Jubilee competition is that the first three rounds are a random draw with teams then graded and placed in the appropriate final. Finishing 2nd 1st and 3rd in the opening galas, meant that we qualified for the B Final (having ranked 6th) As expected, the final turned out to extremely tough, with Orca expected to be the team to beat. However, it was Ramsbottom who were victorious on the night with Ashton finishing a respectable third.

The whole team can be proud of their efforts though with a special mention deserved for Ben H, Lyra H and Abigail F for having to swim seven races each. Abigail F also recorded two personal best times, whilst Ben H and Dylan F won the most races (three each).

The final team was: Harry T / Dylan F / Ben H / Callum S / Charlie S / Ronin G / Ryan C / Kian T / Lily S / Alyssa S / Lyra H / Aimee D / Aimee C / Abigail F / Sophie K and Olivia B

Full results: Gala 1) Orca 145 / Ashton 118 / Howe Bridge 94 (Swimmer of match Abigail Fung)

Gala 2) Ashton 127 / Ramsbottom 124 / Chadderton 115 (Swimmer of match Aimee Carey)

Gala 3) Tyldesley 135 / Bury & Elton 105 / Ashton 95 / Rochdale 73 (Swimmer of match Kian Tevlin)

B Final) Ramsbottom 115 / Orca 113 / Ashton 101 / Dukinfield 81 (Swimmer of match Ben Haughton)

All the swimmers who managed 2 wins or more during the season are shown below with the percentage of wins in brackets.

Ben Haughton 15 wins (68%) Robyn Kilbourne 3 wins (60%) Abigail Fung 10 wins (50%) Aimee Carey 2 wins (22%) Harry Trelfa 8 wins (50%) Ryan Coulthard 2 wins (15%) Kian Tevlin 8 wins (40%) Aimee Dean 2 wins (18%) Dylan Fung 6 wins (40%) Sophie Kershaw 2 wins (17%) Callum Shaw 6 wins (32%) Lily Smith 2 wins (11%) Lyra Holmes 4 wins (18%)

For the third year in succession, Ben recorded the most wins. Just like last year, the majority of this list is made up of girls, well done! Overall, a total of 27 swimmers represented the club in the four Jubilee Gala’s – well done to you all.

INTER TOWN FRIENDLY LEAGUE

Please see the separate season review I publish in the summer to see how we did during the season 2015 > 2016

MANCHESTER & DISTRICT

This popular event was back once again at Broughton Pool in early October. There was no heat this year and the contest was a straight final. But once again the outcome was a familiar one as for the sixth time in succession we finished runners up! Captain’s Ronin Giron and Sophie Kershaw collected the runners up shield and Mollie Ellis Shaw was a deserving Swimmer of the Match winner.

PERSONAL BESTS

As an indication as to which swimmers have improved their times the most during the year, the swimmers with 9 p.bs and more are noted below. Including the final Gala of 2016 v Hyde, Dylan Fung leads the way with an amazing 37 personal best times. A brilliant achievement and well done Dylan! Dylan is followed by: Ryan C 31 / Lyra H 28 / Abigail F 27 / Ben H 26 / Ronin G 22 / Callum S 21 / Tegan S 21 / Harry T 20 / Aimee C 19 / James F 18 / Sam D 18 / Lily S 17 / Sophie K 17 / Alyssa S 14 / Erin P 14 / Kasey E 14 / Scarlett C 14 / Amber W 13 / Rory L 12 / Lois D 12 / Dominic A 11 / Aimee D 11 / Mollie E S 11 / Josh B 10 / Jessica W 10 / Michael H 9 and Robyn K 9

(Last year the top three were Abigail F, Caitlin L and Ryan C)

In a reverse of last year, the Girls in 2016 averaged more p.bs per swimmer with 10.2 per swimmer compared to 9.1 for the Boy. Well done to the Girls!

SUMMER FUND RAISING SWIM

This year, 75 swimmers (and parents) competed in the fun event to raise money for the club in what was an excellent competition, won by Aidan Tevlin’s team. £1,975.50 was raised and once again, a big thank you to Steve Shilley who raised half of this!

I must mention however, that unfortunately 1 in 3 of those who took part in the event failed to raise any sponsor money. The idea behind the tournament is to raise club funds to keep the cost of your swim at just £2.50. We will continue with this event in 2017, but I would ask that all those entering, recognise the importance of this event to the Club.

CHARITY HANDICAP KNOCKOUT

This year we had 45 swimmers entering the knockout which was the 19th year we have held the event. Sponsor money is still being raised during December and this year we are raising money for Reubens Retreat and the Believe and Achieve Trust.

This year’s final was between Lily Smith and Dylan Fung. In the climax to a brilliant tournament, it was Dylan who came out on top by overcoming Lily’s head start. Lily recorded her 2nd personal best time in the final, but Dylan also recorded a personal best time for a narrow win. Just like Harry Trelfa last year, this was Dylan’s 5th personal best time in a row, which was a tremendous achievement. Well done to Dylan and commiserations to Lily.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

Congratulations to the following swimmers, who have attended every single gala the club has competed in* during the season (21) up to and including 6th December.

Harry Trelfa, Ben Haughton, Callum Shaw and Ryan Coulthard An excellent effort from both swimmers and parents I’m sure you will agree.

This is the fourth year in a row that Ben has competed in every gala, which really is an amazing achievement. Well done to Ben (and of course Stuart and Nicola!)

* Only swimmers under 13 are eligible for this award (Inter / Jubilee and Junior)

FINALLY

As ever, a big thank you to all those who help with the running of the galas, from taking money on the door, setting up the equipment, scoring, announcing, the runners, raffle donators, timekeepers, those who send up, look after the blocks, takeovers and those who cheer on the swimmers.

As I am sure you all appreciate though, we do need as many parents and senior swimmers to continue to help out in gala’s whenever possible. I have been very pleased with the help offered for our home galas during the year, which is much appreciated and I would hope that this can continue in the future. If you do not currently get involved and wish to take a more active role, please see me or any of the coaches.

I have often said this, but I have no doubt that we run the most professional galas of all clubs and they nearly always run without a hitch. Thanks for your support from both myself and the swimmers and I look forward to this continuing in the future.
