National Geographic Food Compilation Mini Magazine

Name ______

National Geographic Food Compilation Mini Magazine

Introduction: Over the last year, National Geographic has been running articles dealing with issues concerning Food. These articles have spanned many different aspects of the phrase “Farm to Table” which deals with the reality of where our food comes from and how it travels to your plate. They also explored the topics of feeding a growing population as well as hunger in America and abroad. Since these are topics that will be discussed during this unit, you will be receiving a mini-magazine containing some of these articles.

You will read each of the 5 articles over the course of this unit. You will work in groups of 4-5 students and will be assigned one article that you must become an expert on. Each group member will be responsible for understanding the issue presented in your article. As a group, you will lead a discussion about your article as well as issues raised in it. There is no “presentation” to this assignment, no power point or poster. You will create discussion questions to prompt participation from your students and provide them as a handout for the class.

All students must participate in the discussion about these articles and how they tie into the content taught in class.

Very little class time will be allotted to work on this. You will need to get contact information for your group members and make arrangements to work outside of class together during study halls, lunches, before/after school and at home.

In an addition to these articles, National Geographic has also created a webpage devoted to these issues where more information can be found: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/food-special-compilation/
