Kinesthetic Learners  Encourage these students to handle flash cards of the prefixes from this chapter.  Review the four categories of word parts before beginning work with prefixes.  Stress the importance of ©2013 by Pearson Education, Inc. Teaching Tips Emphasize the fact that not all words will have all types of word parts.

Teaching Tips Stress the importance of learn- ing the word parts through memorization. Homework Assignments • Complete the Spelling Challenge associated with this chapter. • Have students practice by looking up ten of the terms presented in this chapter in a medical dictionary. Did You Know? A spelling error that changes just one or two letters in a term can completely change its mean- ing.

Teaching Tips Ask the students to look up the

Classroom Activities Prefix Bee: Create PowerPoint flash cards of prefixes. Have all students stand, and ask one to define the prefix. If the student is correct, he/she remains stand- ing. If the student is wrong, he/she sits down. Continue until only one student is standing. Homework Assignments  Have students complete the Word Search Exer- cise associated with this chapter. LO 3 Use prefixes to build medical terms. Teaching Tips To be able to identify the correct meaning of the prefix, you will need to analyze the defi- ©2013 by Pearson Education, Inc. Wingerd, Lesson Plans for Medical Terminology Complete!, 2/e nition of the medical word. Tell students that analyzing a medical term is a little like de- tective work. You must investi- gate every part of the term. Classroom Activities Write the phonetic spelling of words with prefixes on the board, and select students to spell the term correctly.

Teaching Tips Say each new term, and have students repeat them. Students may also form groups and practice pronouncing the words together. Did You Know? Most medical terms are formed by assembling various word parts to construct a term.

Teaching Tips Analyzing a medical term is like detective work. Investigate every part of the term.

Classroom Activities  Have students make

 Play a game of Prefix Bingo. Or better yet, play a game of Bingo that combines all word parts discussed so far (prefixes, roots, suffixes).

 Have students use their flash cards to practice building and defining words. Have students form small groups, and have each student con- tribute two roots, two prefixes, and two suffix- es from their flash cards. Ask students to build several terms (with one prefix, one root, and one suffix per word). Then ask the groups to define

 Prefix Bee: Create Pow- erPoint flash cards of prefixes. Have all stu- dents stand, and ask one to define the prefix. If the student is correct, he/she remains standing. If the student is wrong, he/she sits down. Contin- ue until only one student is standing.

Critical Thinking Questions 1. Does every word have a prefix? 2. Do you think it is possi- ble to have a word that has more than three word parts? Why or why not? Would such a word necessarily have a pre- fix? Teaching Tips  Say each new term, and have students repeat it. Students may also form groups and practice pronouncing the words together.

Wingerd, Lesson Plans for Medical Terminology Complete!, 2/e Homework Assignments • Have students complete the True/False, Fill in the Blank, and Short Answer exercises associated with this chapter. • Have students prepare flash cards for the common word roots, prefixes, and suffixes and begin memorizing them. As new word roots are introduced in each chapter, add a flash card to your stack.
