DIFFUSION OF RESEARCH PROJECTS

The research project groups at UC3M count on the support of the University’s Communication structure to help them achieve their objectives of information transfer to the general public regarding their initiatives, processes and results. Universidad Carlos III de Madrid has a service that promotes, manages and carries out activities in the area of corporate and brand communication, internal communication, advertising, media relations, social networks, etc. In addition, these activities are also carried out in the area of scientific information and knowledge, through the Oficina de Información Científica (OIC – the Office of Scientific Information). This unit is linked to the Autonomous Community of Madrid’s Network of Scientific Culture and Innovation Units (UCC+i) of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT – Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología).

DIFFUSION IN COMMUNICATION CHANNELS AND MEDIA

The OIC uses a variety of formats and journalistic genres to produce scientific information regarding research projects and other subjects of interest in the field of research and innovation, with the institutional support of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office for Research and Communication. In addition, the OIC participates in campaigns, such as Science Week, to spread scientific news to society at large. Furthermore, this office produces news articles and press releases on a weekly basis, using a web format, video, photographs, etc., all of which are distributed through the following channels and media:

Official scientific news platforms:

- Notiweb. Madrid+d. Comunidad de Madrid (Autonomous Community of Madrid). This has over 61,000 subscribers, particularly in the area of academics within the Spanish-speaking world. Throughout 2011 over two million people received Notiweb in their e-mail. In addition, the web madri+d, where these news reports are also seen, has received more than 65 million visits. Web: www.madrimasd.org/informacionidi/notiweb/default.asp - Agency SINC (Servicio de Información y Noticias Científicas – Science News and Information Service). FECYT. This is the first public information agency specializing in science, technology and innovation in Spanish, with over one million visitors per year and nearly three million pages views in 2011. There are approximately one hundred journalist members who use it a source. Web: www.agenciasinc.es - AlphaGalileo. This is an independent news service regarding European research in the fields of science, medicine, art, humanities and social sciences, mainly aimed at the scientific community and journalists. More than 8,000 journalists are registered, and they use this portal as a news source. Web: www.alphagalileo.org - EurekAlert. This is the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s on-line scientific news service. It is a global leader in the sector of the distribution of news regarding science, health, medicine and technology. There are around 9,000 journalists from approximately one hundred

countries registered. They use this platform as a news source. The web receives nearly one million visitors each month. Web: www.eurekalert.org

UC3M’s external communication channels:

-News on the homepage of the corporate web: www.uc3m.es The university’s scientific information and knowledge news is published weekly in this section. The UC3M web received over 20 million visits during 2011. This page allows access to the SEMANAL3 bulletin and the corporate magazine DIGITAL3.

-Scientific news web: www.uc3m.es/infocientifica News regarding scientific information and knowledge are published weekly on these pages, which receive more than 28,000 visits.

-Video Channels: Videos with interviews and news regarding scientific information and knowledge, in addition to being distributed in the scientific platforms, are published in: - ARCA, UC3M’s video portal. http://arca.uc3m.es - YouTube EDU: www.youtube.com/user/UC3M/featured - iTunesU

-Social Networks: All of the videos published on Youtube have an associated RSS that links them with UC3M’s institutional Facebook and Twitter pages.

-Press release deliveries: All news are sent to the media directory and specialized science and technology sections, which have over one hundred registries.

-Electronic bulletins for specific audiences: Each month, electronic bulletins targeting companies, alumni and secondary schools are published. These bulletins also disseminate UC3M’s scientific news. http://hosting01.uc3m.es/spcestud/web/boletin14.html

Internal communication channels:

These news media allow knowledge to be made available to the over 18,000 students and approximately 3,000 employees of UC3M.

Weekly3: This is a weekly electronic bulletin that is sent by e-mail every Monday to all uc3m addresses, and which includes scientific news. It is sent to the news media as UC3M’s activities calendar. It is also accessible from the public zone of the corporate webpage.

- Digital Signage: This is a network of screens placed in the public zones of the three campuses, with an ample broadcast schedule in which interviews with researchers are emitted, with subtitles for this channel to make the interviews accessible.
