ESC1000L EARTH SCIENCE LAB LAB SYLLABUS

LOCATION: Brandon Campus of H.C.C., Rm. BSCI 101

INSTRUCTORS: Prof. Jim Wysong Jr. – [email protected]

Mr. James Fatherree – [email protected]

INSTRUCTOR'S PHONE NUMBER AND OFFICE HOURS:

Prof. Wysong’s office phone number is 253-7805. His office is located in BSCI 108A. Mr. Fatherree’s office phone number is 253-7906. His office is located in BSCI207B. A copy of the instructor's schedules, including their office hours, will be posted during the first week of class.

Students are encouraged to use Hawkmail, the H.C.C. email system to contact the instructors rather than to leave voicemail messages.

TEXT/MANUAL:

The required manual for the lab is Earth Science – Laboratory Investigations and Activities, by J. Wysong. The class text, Earth Science by Tarbuck and Lutgens, should be brought to the lab for reference.

MATERIALS:

Students will be expected to provide their own rulers, writing instruments (all labs must be done in pencil), and calculators (not cell phones in calculator mode) for the labs. The instructor will provide all specialized materials and apparatus.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a one credit hour introductory lab in the earth sciences designed to accompany the lecture/discussion class, ESC1000. One credit hour general education labs for non- majors courses meet for 100 minutes per week adjusted for holidays. Students in this lab must be concurrently enrolled in ESC1000, or have previously passed the 1 REV08/SP ESC1000 or GLY1001 lecture. Exercises, presentations and demonstrations will be used in the lab to illustrate many of the concepts and topics discussed in the lectures.

INSTITUTIONAL COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR ESC1000L:

By its nature, the earth science class covers a voluminous amount of material. The Sciences of Geology, Meteorology, Astronomy and Oceanography are all included in Earth Science. Therefore, it should not be expected of anyone teaching this class to cover all of the following objectives.

This course will cover the following topics:

1. Scientific measurements.

2. Scientific calculations and unit conversions.

3. Mineral identification.

4. Rock identification.

5. Topographic map reading (location systems, contour lines, landform interpretation).

6. Spectragraphic analysis.

7. Weather graphs, weather instruments and weather calculations.

8. Weather map, reading, and interpretation.

9. Evaluation of physics/chemistry related topics: heat transfer, mirrors and lenses, celestial measurements. 10. Seismic and tectonic data analysis.

COURSE MECHANICS:

During the lab meetings, the instructor will review the lab assignment(s) from the previous week and introduce the next lab topic and assignment. The instructor will then be available to direct and assist lab work conducted in class. Follow-up questions and some activities may need to be completed by the student outside of classtime.

Unless otherwise noted, assignments should be completed by the beginning of the next lab meeting. Failure of the student to complete the lab prior to class time may result in a loss of points for that lab. Absences will result in a loss of credit for lab work.

2 REV08/SP GRADING:

Lab grades will be based on the percentage of the total number of points earned by the student on the various lab assignments and on the two lab tests. The value of the assignments and tests are as follows:

Attendance at lab meetings………………………….10 pts week

Lab worksheets...... …………...... …...5 pts each

Lab mid-term and final ……………………...... 80 pts each

GRADING SCALE:

A = 100-90%, B = 89-80%, C = 79-70%, D = 69-60%, F = 59% and below

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to be in attendance at all lab meetings for the full duration of the meeting time, unless dismissed by the instructor 1. Some labs may be able to be made-up with prior approval, however many of the labs and demonstrations are difficult to repeat for the purpose of make-ups, and any absence may result in a loss of points (see instructor for details).

Unexcused absences will result in a loss of points for the missed assignment.

An Unexcused absence on the day of a lab exam will result in a zero for the exam.

CELL PHONES, PAGERS, and other ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

Cell phones and pagers must be turned off while in class. It is disruptive and rude when these devices "go off" during lectures or exams. In addition, it is unacceptable to engage in text messaging during the class meeting time. If you are using any electronic devices other than a calculator (not your phone in calculator mode), a voice recorder, or a laptop computer to take notes, you may be asked by the instructor to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class period. The use of any electronic device not authorized by the instructor during a test may result in the forfeiture of your grade for that test. All electronic devices should be turned off and stored out of sight during tests.

DISABLED STUDENT SERVICES:

1 Students arriving more than 15 minutes late, or leaving before dismissal will not receive credit for attendance. 3 REV08/SP HCC’s Offices of Services for Students with Disabilities provide a wide range of free services to meet the needs of disabled students. Students with disabling conditions that require special academic accommodations must submit documentation of their disability and specific needs to a campus Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. Additional information may be obtained at the college website for disabled students:

http://www.hccfl.edu/dm/studentservices/disabilities/index.html

Students may contact the Brandon Campus Coordinator in room BADM 217. The phone number for the coordinator is 253-7914. STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY AND CONDUCT:

As should be expected in a college class, the student assumes responsibility for keeping up with his/her standing in the class. The instructor will not routinely issue grade warnings. Furthermore, it is not up to the instructor to follow up with you on missed notes or assignments - it is your grade, and thus your responsibility. It is also expected that students will conduct themselves in an academically honest and ethical manner. Cheating, plagiarism, and disruptive, disrespectful or inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated. These activities will result in penalties including, but not limited to: the deduction of up to 10 points per incident from the student’s cumulative course grade, expulsion from the class for the remainder of the class period, referral to the Dean of Student Services for further action as outlined in the student handbook. Please take time to reread this syllabus; it is your guide2 to the way class is conducted. The syllabus and the course calendar are very important; take care not to lose them. Copies of the syllabus and calendar will be posted on the course website for your reference online. NOTES:

2 The Syllabus is not, however, a binding legal contract. It is subject to change and revision unilaterally by the instructor and/or administration with appropriate notice. 4 REV08/SP
