OWEN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTC SYLLABUS SECOND QUARTER AY 2014-2015 (20 Oct – 19 Dec 2014)

Lt Col Allen [email protected]

MSgt Smithson [email protected]

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Cadets will develop an appreciation of the basic elements and requirements for national security, respect for and an understanding of the need for constituted authority in a democratic society, patriotism and an understanding of their personal obligation to contribute to national security, habits of orderliness and precision, a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, and leadership, a broad-based knowledge of the aerospace age and fundamental aerospace doctrine, basic military skills, a knowledge of and appreciation for the traditions of the Air Force, an interest in completing high school and pursuing higher educational goals or skills, an understanding of the Air Force and military as a possible career path.

The mission of the AFJROTC program is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.

The goals of the program are to instill values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment in high school students.

2. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of AFJROTC are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline; and provide instruction in air and space fundamentals.

3. COURSE MATERIALS Cadet Handbook/Drill Handbook Leadership I Textbook and Workbook AS I Textbook and Workbook Leadership IV Textbook and Workbook AS II Textbook and Workbook

4. COURSE SCHEDULE: Specific topics for each class are listed on the last page of this syllabus.

5. TEACHING METHOD: We will utilize the informal lecture and guided discussion (in most cases both) as methods of instruction. Overheads, films, videos, and handouts will supplement the lecture material. As part of developing leadership skills, upper level students will be involved in providing instruction to new students.

6. CLASS PARTICIPATION: All students will be prepared for each class. This includes reading assigned material, being prepared to answer instructor questions, and participating in class discussions. If you have questions during class, raise them. This feedback is essential for the instructor and the student alike. Asking questions is an excellent form of active participation in the learning process.

AFJROTC IN-20051 7. TIMELINESS: All students will be in their seats before class starts. We will be ready to proceed with the lesson at the time class is scheduled to begin. Tardiness causes disruption. When you disrupt the class, you steal precious time from the instructor and every other student in the room. Tardiness will hurt your Leadership/Followership grade. See the Student Handbook for rules.

8. UNIFORMS: Unless otherwise exempted, the uniform will be worn the full day every uniform day, normally Thursday, and as directed for special occasions. A first-year cadet will be issued the blue uniform only when he/she has passed a written test and has participated in two weekly inspections (met grooming standards).

9. PERSONAL APPEARANCE: All students pursuing membership in the AFJROTC program are required to maintain the appropriate standards of personal appearance and dress. For example, when in uniform, members are not allowed to wear any body piercing items (except for a single post style ear- ring for females; no ear-rings for males), cannot have excess tattooing, may not dye their hair using anything other than natural colors, may not wear clothing that brings discredit upon the Air Force or US government, and must wear all required uniform items. On Wellness Day, normally Friday, students must wear the Air Force PT Uniform, and comfortable shoes for physical activity.

10. CLASSROOM DEPORTMENT/PROTOCOL: You should maintain an atmosphere of military discipline and attention to the subject while in class. The first student noticing a teacher or staff member entering the room will call the class to attention. You will remain at attention until directed to sit down. If a higher-ranking instructor or a faculty member is already present in the room, do not call the room to attention. You are not required to stand when contributing to class discussions, however, you should use the word “sir/ma’am” or the instructor’s rank when addressing him/her. At the conclusion of class, students again come to attention until dismissed or until the officer leaves the classroom.

11. CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY: See the Student Handbook for rules and enforcement.

d. You MUST achieve a grade of “C” or better in your Air Force courses to maintain academic retention standards and remain in AFJROTC (below a “C” requires instructor approval)

14. ACADEMICS: Remember, ACADEMICS is your #1 job and must be your #1 priority. Always be prepared and always do your best. Be proactive and a team player in AFJROTC. Lt Col Allen and MSgt Smithson are here to help you. We want you to succeed; but you must put forth the effort. ______
