Internship Program

Describe Scope of Broadcasters’ Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

The Community Affairs and Marketing intern assisted in the organization and implementation of promotional events for WBTV. These interns reported to the Community Affairs Director and worked closely with the WBTV Programming and Marketing Departments. Interns learned our news promotion/marketing philosophy and interacted with other departments within WBTV, and experienced hands-on participation in all of our promotional events. Responsibilities included administrative duties; planning and facilitating promotional events; organizing and executing the website public file. All students received college credit for their internship.

Internship Program

Describe Scope of Broadcasters’ Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

Provides experience to students to learn about different careers within the broadcast journalism industry. Students are encouraged to seek advice from and learn from as many different WBTV employees as possible throughout the internship. Students’ activities may include, but are not limited to, helping producers and assignment editors gather information for newscasts, helping reporters gather information for stories and accompany reporters in the field, attending news planning meetings, and watching live broadcasts from the studio and the control room. All students received college credit for their internship.

WBTV participated in mentoring a graduating senior from Cannon School (Davidson, NC). The student shadowed a news anchor in his daily duties for 3 days.

Provided training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination.

WWBT-TV, through its parent company Raycom Media, provided an on-line training course titled “Discrimination-Free Workplace”. This on-line training course was completed by all station Department Heads and hiring supervisors. The course covered what constitutes discrimination and how to prevent it from occurring in the workplace.

WBTV participated in a job fair at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College on March 10, 2009. Representatives from a variety of organizations were available to provide employment opportunities for over 3,000 participants.
