Dear Friends: ADOT is currently looking for an off the shelf fiber management software solution to help us manage the fiber optic cables that we have installed on our right of way. We would like to find out what fiber management software your agency is using and what your experience has been. Due to support issues ADOT is only interested in a commercially available software product and is not interested in a "self written" or a "home grown" solution that a state may have developed for themselves. Also we would appreciate it if a state DOT that is using fiber management software could also provide us with contact information so we could follow up with any questions we may have. Here is a list of the capabilities that ADOT is looking for in a fiber management software. A fiber management software solution typically provides the following information: o Identifies where various fiber optic cables (type and size) have been installed; o Identifies where No. 9 pull boxes have been installed, that serve as key junction/splice points for interconnecting the fiber optic cables; o Identifies the fiber assignments for each of the fibers within the fiber optic cables; o Identifies the fiber termination panel locations and port assignments; and o Identifies which fibers are spliced, where they are spliced, and ultimately identify the end-to-end fiber paths. o The selected fiber management software must also lend itself toward use by other agencies within the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas since they have fiber installed within ADOT's right of way. The software should provide by other agencies multiple account levels/log-ins that permit an owning agency to modify their fiber and allow other agencies to be given view-only access (if owning agency so desires). o Selected software must also provide various access types such as web and field (portable snapshots for field verification use), the ability to import and export datasets, and have controls at the data element level (to assure data is consistent). o Selected software must support a unique cable, fiber, and path naming convention to differentiate between jurisdictional boundaries and the various functions I greatly appreciate your response to our inquiry. Thanks, Reza Karimvand

______From: Darrell Boone To: Steve Cummins Subject: RE: [OPSACADEMY] Off the shelf fiber management software Hey Steve, oddly enough we are looking for the same thing. Jeff and I have spoke with a few companies and watched some demos and webcasts but nothing really stands out. We haven't found anything that will do live management and break detection that we could afford and I can't think of anything that is "off the shelf". They might want to contact there local cable company and/or phone company to see what mapping software they use. All of them involve a lot of field work and plugging data into them and they look like a way to picture the field notes more than anything. I would like to know what they end up with, as I said before we are looking for the same solution. Thanks Darrell Boone ______From: Steve Cummins To: Darrell Boone Subject: FW: [OPSACADEMY] Off the shelf fiber management software Can you assist with any advice on this topic? Let me know and I can respond accordingly. Thanks. Steve

Hello Matt Smith, MDOT ITS Program Manager let me know: We currently don't have any fiber management software/programs. We talked with a couple of companies when at World Congress. One that I have literature for is called NexusWorx; I can't necessarily vouch for them, as my only relationship with them was talking at their vendor booth for about 10 minutes. I should also add that we will be installing SolarWinds for our network management statewide, but this is primarily for field device management, but not necessarily fiber optic cable management. Here is a very delayed response to the request regarding fiber management software. Hope it might be useful to some of you: NDOT currently uses a product by Telvent called Fiber Manager. Fiber Manger has several modules that you can add depending on the needs of the organization so it can be sized according to the organizations needs. Fiber Manager allows you to map fiber as well as identify the different types of fiber, connection, vaults, cross connects, and much more. This is not a customized application and is COT.
