2013 Phase II Business Meeting St. Louis

2013 Phase II Business Meeting—St. Louis 30 May 2013 Welcome A total of seventeen members and prospective members attended the Phase II business meeting in St. Louis on May 30th. Brief Update on Phase II Achievements This Year

 Thanks to the efforts of Jane Dunham and Eric White, Phase II now has a logo.  Thanks to the efforts of Linda Heaney, Phase II now has a Facebook Group Page. Most of the members of that group are Phase II members but not all.  Patti Jones successfully submitted a proposal for a session on preparing for retirement. That proposal was accepted and the session was well received at the St. Louis conference. Many thanks to Patti.  The Phase II Travel Committee, chaired by Bill Barnhart, submitted a proposal to NAFSA for group travel. Thanks to their work, NAFSA gave Phase II the green light to proceed with a trip to Cuba in 2014.  At the request of Phase II, Eric White and other NAFSA staff produced Phase II stickers for the conference badges.  Joy Stevenson served as Phase II’s local host in St. Louis and thanks to her efforts, members enjoyed camaraderie and a superb lunch at Mango Peruvian restaurant on May 30th.

Report from Committee on Archiving Diana Lopez and Louis Gecenok updated those present on what is happening with archiving at the regional and national levels. The University of Arkansas is the NAFSA archive, but other options are being explored. They recognized the efforts of Mickey Slind in setting up a repository of materials in the field of Education Abroad at Dickinson College. Regional Activities All of the regions, except X and XI, have discounted registration fees for retirees. Members in Regions X and XI are encouraged to work with their chair stream on this matter. Regions may want to consider holding a Phase II event or mentoring at their regional conferences. Leadership Succession Those in attendance voted to move to the standard MIG leadership model: Coordinator-Elect, Coordinator and Past Coordinator with each leader serving in that position for one year. Patti Jones was unanimously elected Coordinator-Elect. She will serve in that position until the San Diego conference. Congratulations to Patti and many thanks for her willingness to serve. Next Year’s Annual Conference in San Diego Bob Ericksen agreed to serve as the local host for the 2014 conference in San Diego. The group agreed to having another no-host lunch. Whether the lunch will be on Wednesday or Thursday will depend on the conference schedule. Ideally the lunch would be at a time that does not conflict with conference programming. Nasser Pazirandeh, Meeting Insites, spoke with the group about housing options in San Diego. He announced “it will be near improbable (if not impossible) to secure an inexpensive hotel room near the San Diego convention center during the conference.” Room rates will range from $189 to $240. He suggested that Phase II members consider the Omni, the Embassy Suites, the Westin Gaslamp and the Wyndham Bayfront as excellent, less expensive, options to the headquarter hotels. He also explained what is involved in securing a block of hotel rooms. This would require a four-night commitment of at least ten rooms. Since someone would have to guarantee that amount on his/her credit card, Phase II members decided not to undertake the project. Kay Thomas agreed to submit a proposal on the emotional and psychological preparation for retirement. Val Woolston offered to assist Kay. Other Phase II members may also prepare an open meeting to be offered in the Career Center on the financial preparation for retirement. Phase II will submit a proposal to NAFSA later this summer or this fall requesting that the Career Center include a second room to be used exclusively for presentations and that the information about Career Center offerings be integrated into the Conference Program. Phase II Travel Val Woolston updated the group on the Phase II trip to Cuba in 2014. Phase II members have priority registration for the trip until July 1. At that time, registration will open to NCC members. Phase II will offer future trips for its members. Some of the options include Vietnam, India, South Africa and Myanmar. Travel Insurance Martha Denney will explore the possibility of travel insurance for NAFSAns. Other Congratulations to all of our Phase II members who received awards in St. Louis. Thank you also to Bob Ericksen and Diana Lopez who helped with the Poster Fair. Thank you to Bob Ericksen, David Horner, Ellen Badger and Martha Denney for holding an open meeting on retirement. Thank you to Patti Jones and Kay Thomas for presenting the session of preparation for retirement. Thank you to everyone who attended the business meeting and to all of those who offered to help with one of the agenda items. Remember that there are two ways to communicate with Phase II members, the Phase II website and the Phase II Facebook Page. Bob Ericksen also encouraged everyone to input his/her date in PIE. It looks as though we have a productive and exciting year ahead. Diana Lopez takes over as coordinator effective immediately and will do an amazing job. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as Phase II coordinator these last two year. I will continue to be involved as past coordinator during the upcoming year. Best, Sue
