LANGUAGE ARTS: (Spelling, Reading and Grammar)

SPELLING The students will:  Using the scientific method and they will learn reliable patterns and rules in the English language.  Learn and apply a multi-sensory strategy which will lead to permanent memorization of words that do not follow the patterns or rules.  Learn to analyze words as regular words, rule, or irregular words.

READING The students will:  Understand elements of and gain appreciation for different genres.  Explore story elements and increase comprehension in written text.  Develop a love of reading and explore quality literature.  Expand their reading vocabulary.

3rd Quarter Skills:  Cause and Effect  Biographies  Review of all reading comprehension skills

4th Quarter Skills:  Inferencing  Review of all reading comprehension skills  Autobiographies

GRAMMAR The students will:  Develop an appreciation for and the skills needed for effective paragraph writing.  Journal on a weekly basis.  Explore parts of speech.  Expand their written vocabulary.  Feel confident in an environment that promotes independent writing so that they can progress comfortably at their own rates and develop a strong sense of themselves as effective, fluent writers.

1st Quarter Skills:  Word Order  Sentences  Subject-naming part  Predicate-telling part  Topic sentence and closing statement provided for journal and paragraph writing  Nouns, common nouns, proper nouns, pronouns

2nd Quarter Skills:  Contractions  Adjectives  Topic sentence and closing statement provided for journal and paragraph writing  Write a book including all story elements  Proofing Skills

3rd Quarter Skills:  Descriptive Narrative  Friendly Letters  Synonyms  Antonyms  SAT preparations  Topic sentence provided for journal and paragraph writing, students supply closing statement  Proofing Skills

4th Quarter Skills:  Autobiographies  Students supply topic sentence, closing statement and complete, descriptive, quality paragraphs  Proofing Skills

MATH:

The students will:  Recognize and effectively use math symbols and the language of math.  Develop an appreciation and love of math.  Mastery of addition and subtraction math facts.

SCIENCE: The students will:  Explore and actively participate in the reading, thinking and doing of Science.  Learn by doing hands on activities and practice the scientific process skills learned through experimentation.

3rd Quarter Units:  Space  Ecology

4th Quarter Units:  Body  Plants

SOCIAL STUDIES:

The students will:  Explore history, geography, economics, government, citizenship and Catholic social teachings.  Integrate these concepts in their daily lives.

2nd Quarter Units:  Government: Elections/Voting  Presidents  Patriotic Symbols

3rd Quarter Units:  Texas  Continents

4th Quarter Units:  Map Skills  Our Neighborhood HANDWRITING:

The students will:  Form letter correctly  Write legibly in manuscript and cursive
