Year 8 Newspaper Assignment – Part 2

1. Invent your own headlines for the photos over the page. Remember, headlines need to be fairly short, are often amusing, and need to catch the attention of the reader. Headlines are usually in present tense, and often skip out unnecessary words (e.g., “Teacher Explodes”, not “A Teacher Exploded Yesterday”).

2. Pick your best headline and create an idea for the news story behind it. For your news story, you will need to include:

a. at least two different people to interview (they could be eye-witnesses, experts, members of the police, politicians, relatives of the people, or anyone involved).

b. a caption for the photograph

3. Now you need to write the news article. Your piece needs to sound like a real news article so remember:

a. Start with the most important information – the breaking news – then fill in the details and the background afterwards. It’s not like a story that starts from the start, builds the suspense and goes to the end. The climax of an article goes first.

b. Use short factual sentences, almost always in the past tense.

c. Have a byline saying your name (e.g., “Reporter: Alex Ashley” or “By Alex Ashley”). This goes at the top of the article, above the first line, not at the end.

d. Use short paragraphs, i.e., lots of paragraph breaks.

e. News articles aren’t supposed to include the opinion of the reporter. You need to report the most interesting details of the story, without making any of your own comments.

4. Your draft article should be at least ¾ of a page. When you have drafted your article in your book, check it for spelling and grammar. All articles in newspapers are edited carefully. Type up your good copy in Microsoft Word.

5. Use a real newspaper article from a newspaper provided by the teacher to help you make your article look like a real newspaper article. You will need:

a. A large bold font for the headline; b. Bold font for the byline; c. Columns for the main part of the article. To do this...
