Brown County EDUCATION Action Team Agenda

Brown County EDUCATION Action Team Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 Notes

Mission Statement: Raising Expectations to Improve Education 2010 Goal: Teacher Morale/Retention Co-Chairs: Kelly Grady/Daina Howell

Attendees: Jennifer Ingram, Daina Howell, Kelly Grady, Ben Ellefritz, Merle Kenady, Sue Kenady, Erin McCaskill, Van Wilson, Chris Brierton, Jean Buckley, Angela Salrin, Marcy Wort, Ann Williamson

PTO – Kelly/Jennifer: − 33 people signed up to get more info about a PTO at school registration. A total of 45-50 people, including BCEAT subcommittee members are interested in a PTO. − Jennifer will lead the PTO and Erin will be the secretary. − The PTO will take over most of the teacher appreciation activities the BCEAT performs now. − We discussed what the mission statement should be of the PTO. We went over a general mission statement. − Two possible sides of the mission statement would be; 1) teacher appreciation and participation, community support, organizing and helping with activities (ex. book fairs, school pictures) and 2) parental involvement in the schools (this would coincide with the family engagement the schools are trying to promote now). − One goal is to have the teachers working with the parents and visa versa. − Expectations need to be clear. − Need to answer the question; where are we going? We need to determine the basic goals now and then get input from the public about additional goals later on. − It was discussed to include St. Mary School in the PTO as long as the goals of the PTO coincide with their mission. − Parental involvement would first be focused on in the Elementary and Middle Schools. − It was suggested to have a survey at the end of the informational meeting about the structure and mission of the PTO to get feedback. − The PTO meetings would be at the same time as our BCEAT meetings and for the first couple of meetings they would be in our meetings as well.

Concerns – − Funding – we keep asking the same people. The PTO wouldn’t need a big budget. − Name – we wouldn’t have to call it a PTO. − A PTO would not have to be set up as a 501C3 organization.

Advertising - − It was suggested letters be sent home with students from school, place an ad in the paper, letters be sent to the teachers and the event put on the community calendar/bulletin board on TV.

Action Steps – − Jennifer and Erin will set up an informational meeting to determine interest and get ideas and feedback. 2

− Karla will put an ad in the paper under the BCAT page and send out emails. − Merle will send out an “All Staff” email to the teachers and staff. − Kelly will email Ann so she can send an email to St. Mary staff. − Jennifer and Erin will come up with a list of specific activities other local PTOs are doing. This list will give the teachers and parents and idea of what we are trying to accomplish with the PTO. − Jennifer and Erin will create some informational documents and the BCEAT will review them at our next meeting. Then we will have the PTO informational meeting sometime in November or December. − Jennifer, Erin and/or Kelly will email the interested PTO participants to let them know we are working on setting up the informational meeting and will be getting them the information shortly.

Hornet T-shirt Quilt Raffle - Kelly: − So far 145 tickets have been sold for about $250, a profit of $200 and $50 goes towards having the quilt made. − Possibly have the quilt at a Jr. High girls basketball game and at High School volleyball games.

Action Steps – − Kelly will see if Karla can put an ad in the BCAT page of the paper for the quilt.

February Fling - Kelly: − We had a discussion on if we needed to change the venue and date in order to get more attendees. − We currently have about $2,100 in the account, $900 for teacher appreciation and $1200 for whatever we feel necessary. − The Fling last year cost about $3,100. − Erin has discussed the event with Country Inn & Suites in Quincy and they have offered us the same type of contract we had last year with the same costs. − We are looking at a date of Saturday, February 26th. − We will have the event at Country Inn & Suites again as long as we can afford it. − Volunteers will be needed to be in charge of decorations and invitations.

Action Steps – − Kelly will ask the United Way for $2,000 and the action team will fund the rest. − Erin will work with Country Inn & Suites if we go with them. − Merle will ask Jeff Kassing if he can provide the entertainment again.

Flu Shots - Kelly: − Moreland & Devitt has flu shots available to have a flu clinic for the teachers. − The cost will be the same as last year; $5/staff and $25/United Way. − Last year United Way paid $625 for flu shots. − It was discussed to have the clinic towards the end of September or the beginning of October from 2-4 pm. We are looking at the week of Oc. 11. − We had some discussion about actually having the flu shot clinic. If teachers want the flu shot will they go ahead and get it on their own? Should we not have the flu shot clinic so we can reduce the amount of money we are asking the United Way for?

Action Steps – − Moreland & Devitt needs a specific date of the flu shot clinic and the number of employees that be attending. − Possibly call the Health Department to see how much a flu shot would cost to see if it would be cheaper to go with them. 3

 Feedback was very good at 4.65 out of 5.00

 Financial Peace (at Dot) is being opened to the public – is this something we can/should use as a springboard?

 What about education people on the actual cost of a trip to Quincy – is it cheaper to shop in Quincy?

 If not spending money locally, what are their options

 Bryan and I decided we definitely need leadership on this Action Team that understands and knows the goals and needs of the Action Team and is more knowledgeable of economics and housing than we are.
