JOB DESCRIPTION

March 2011

POSITION TITLE: Technical Media Specialist, Broadcast Media Department

REPORTS TO: Director of Broadcast Media

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

 Provides lighting, video, and audio technical direction for a variety of events across campus and beyond in accordance with priorities set by the Director of Broadcast Media. (40%)  Provides services to the office of Information and Instructional Technologies in cooperation with the Coordinator of Classroom Technology. (35%)  Manages the hiring and supervision of outside vendors when necessary to provide above services. (10%)  Maintains existing and coordinates the purchase of new lighting, video, and audio equipment for campus events. (10%)  Assists in hiring, training and maintaining student staff to support above functions. (5%)

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1. Serves as technical director for high-profile events in various venues across campus. Designs, selects, transports and installs lighting, video projection and sound reinforcement equipment; operates equipment during events and performances.

2. Assists the Classroom Technology Coordinator in the support and management of campus classroom and meeting room technology, including the design, installation, and management of installed presentation technologies and other custom audio/video related projects; develops, updates and evaluates documentation and 'how-to' resources for technology users; assists with resolution of user issues and daily maintenance involving installed audio/video and computer technologies.

3. Researches, selects, and manages outside lighting/video/audio engineering professional contractors when required.

4. Assists in supervision of student workers for classroom support, sound reinforcement, and video production.

5. Maintains installed and portable lighting/video/audio equipment in Skoglund Gymnasium, Tostrud Center, Buntrock Commons, and other campus locations. Performs routine maintenance of existing equipment and installation of new systems and equipment. Coordinates with college and outside contractors as required.

6. Prepares yearly budget recommendations for digital audio and video projects. Coordinates the purchasing and maintenance of the spare parts inventory and stock equipment necessary for routine repairs and upgrades. Coordinates the check-in, initial hardware set-up, branding and serial number authentication, and logging for A/V equipment.

7. Coordinates feature video capture and post-production editing for selected college constituents, including Admissions, Advancement & College Relations, Sports Information, Music, and other academic departments.

8. Develops and maintains relationships with academic department heads, Advancement and College Relations staff, Conferences and Events staff, Chapel staff, Music Organizations staff, Sports Information Staff, and lighting/video/audio engineering professionals. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in supervising student lighting, video, and audio engineers in cooperation with the Associate Director of Broadcast Media (10 or more).

CONTACTS: General public, students, faculty/staff (daily); Deans and Department Heads (monthly); President/Vice President/Regents (rarely)

EDUCATION: Essential: Some college Desirable: College degree in communications, IIT, audio / video technology, or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Essential: 5+ years experience in lighting/video/audio production. Desirable: 3-5 years experience with classroom and instructional technologies design, installation, and support services.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:  Advanced working ability and understanding of stage lighting design, circuitry, and operation.  Advanced working ability and understanding of video projection, recording, and editing.  Understanding of sound reinforcement design and operation.  Ability to schedule and perform preventive maintenance work, repairing equipment when possible.  Advanced working ability with industry-standard multimedia software for PC and Mac (Final Cut Pro, ProTools, Photoshop, Flash, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)  Familiarity with Dreamweaver (or similar) software and web design best-practices.  Ability to interact and work well with musical and visual artists.  Effective communication and organizational skills.  Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and independently.  Ability to work effectively under deadline-related pressure.  Willingness to work long evening and weekend hours, and willingness for flexibility in remaining weekly schedule.  Sense of humor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting and carrying heavy equipment in excess of 50lbs; climbing stairs; remaining stationary throughout concert or event.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working at heights (including attic spaces, personal lifts, and catwalks); on occasion hot or cold rooms.

WORK SCHEDULE: FTE: .83

Schedule managed by IIT during college breaks, all of June, and portions of July and August. Remaining weekly schedule (part-time) to be determined in consultation with the Director of Broadcast Media.

Frequent evenings, weekends required for special events. Some Holiday (primarily Memorial and Labor Day weekends) work required.
