Taylor of Gaffney, on April 21, 20 1999, at the age of seventy-eight; and 21 22 Whereas, born in Gaffney on August 29, 1920, he was the son of 23 the late Lewis A. and Venia McDaniel Taylor; and 24 25 Whereas, he graduated from Cowpens High School and took 26 further business courses in the 1950’s; and 27 28 Whereas, Mr. Taylor’s occupation was manufacturing mattresses, 29 and he was a co-owner of the Sleep-Easy Mattress Company; and 30 31 Whereas, Mr. Taylor served his country with honor with his 32 military service; in World War II he was a member of Company B 33 of the 337th Infantry, 85th Division from October 1942 until 34 October 1945; and 35 36 Whereas, on March 17, 1946, Newton C. Taylor married Mary 37 Pettit Blanton of Gaffney, who survives him; of this fifty-three 38 year-long blessed union were born two children, Steve of Gaffney 39 and Mary Martha Carter of Goose Creek and now, two 40 grandchildren; and 41
1 [3983] 1 1 Whereas, in addition to leaving his wife of the home, children, and 2 grandchildren, Mr. Taylor is survived by two brothers, Cecil of 3 Charlotte and Carroll of Prescott, Minnesota, and four sisters, Vera 4 Taylor of Shelby, North Carolina, Katherine Barnette of 5 Spartanburg, Kaye Bramlett of Valdese, North Carolina, and 6 Becky Scruggs of Gaffney; and 7 8 Whereas, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gaffney 9 and in fact, the Howard Sunday School Class served as his 10 honorary pallbearers; and 11 12 Whereas, Mr. Taylor was a very active member in his community; 13 he was a member of the Masons, Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign 14 Wars, and the American Legion, and he was a Shriner; and 15 16 Whereas, public service held its attraction to Mr. Taylor also, as he 17 served with distinction in the House of Representatives from 18 1955-56 and 1967-70; and 19 20 Whereas, Newton C. Taylor’s death represents a tremendous loss 21 to Gaffney, Cherokee County, and the State of South Carolina, and 22 we want the members of his family and many friends to know that 23 they are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. 24 Now, therefore, 25 26 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 27 concurring: 28 29 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 30 Carolina extend their deepest sympathy to the family and many 31 friends of the Honorable Newton C. Taylor, former member of the 32 South Carolina House of Representatives from Cherokee County. 33 34 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 35 the family of the Honorable Newton C. Taylor. 36 ----XX----
