WHAT IS GET OUTSIDE BC? Get Outside BC is a cost-free collaborative youth leadership project that aims to strengthen youth attachment to British Columbia’s wilderness by empowering young leaders across the province. The project is created through a collaborative effort between CPAWS-BC, BC Parks, Mountain Equipment Co-op and Child and Nature Alliance of Canada.
Since 2011, Get Outside BC has been transforming young people in BC to become leaders in their community. The program provides both a gateway experience for youth engagement with BC's outdoors, and subsequent opportunities for training and education through youth-led follow-up events. The result is the creation of a BC-wide, supportive network of youth leaders.
Who: Youth aged 14-18 from Kimberley and the surrounding communities When: July 30th– October 28th 2017 Where: Phase 1 will be at Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. Phase 2-3 will be community based What: The three phases of the Get Outside BC project are briefly as follows:
Phase I – Youth Outdoor Leadership Camp - July 30 th – August 3 rd 2017 For 5 days/4 nights 10 youth will come together for an outdoor getaway camp at Kokanee Creek Provincial Park where they will participate in leadership and outdoor skill building workshops, try new outdoor activities, and learn how to plan outdoor adventures from when they return home. All expenses of this project are paid for. *Prior to the camp, participants are expected to prepare by completing a pre-camp component which can be done at home or abroad.
Phase II – Youth-led Outdoor Initiatives and Outdoor Adventures / August 3 rd – October 28 th 2017 Youth will attend bi-weekly group gatherings to continue building leadership skills and to continue getting outside. Within each month you will attend a group meeting focused on skill building and a separate gathering to do an outdoor activity together (i.e.: canoe, hike, rock climb, etc.). Further, each participant will lead an outdoor event that inspires their peers to get outside. Youth have access to up to $150 bursary to support their events and are encouraged to work with other community groups. A Get Outside BC Coordinator will support the planning and delivery of the youth-led initiatives.
Phase III - Celebration / October 28 th 2017 Youth participants, alumni, mentors and Get Outside BC staff will gather to celebrate the achievements, offer feedback on each other’s projects and for a final outdoor adventure together. This will be a one day gathering on October 28th in Kimberley. Get Outside BC - 2017 Kimberley Application Applications due Sunday, June 4th by 11:59pm Please submit to: [email protected]
