SWECO POLICY#__33__11/2008 TELEPHONE NUMBER 1-800-DIG-SAFE (1-800-344-7233) STATEWIDE NOTICE TIMING: Excavator must give notice of intent to excavate a minimum of 48 hrs in advance but not more than 14 days in advance. The 48 hours minimum excludes weekends and holidays.

In case of an emergency excavation that is necessary to protect life, health, property or is a situation that might result in interruption of service, the excavator may begin emergency excavation immediately and shall take reasonable precautions to protect underground facilities. In the even, excavator is to notify a Notification Center as promptly as is reasonable possible.

HOW TO NOTIFY THE KANSAS “ONE-CALL” SYSTEM 1. Call the Kansas”One-Call” system at 1-800-344-7233. 2. Give the name of person and company serving the notice, specifying that the excavation is for ______and will be on ______property 3. Give the location of the excavation area using the street address, if available, and the location of the excavation at this street address. If there is no street address, give accurate description of the excavation area using any available designations such as a closest street, road, or intersection 4. Give the name, address and telephone number of the excavator or the excavator’s company. 5. Give the excavator’s field telephone number, if available. 6. Give the starting date and time and anticipated completion date of the excavation. 7. Describe the work to be done and state as to whether explosives will be used.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE UNDERGROUND FACILITY OPERATORS: 1. Upon receiving notice from Kansas “One-Call”, an underground facility operator is to mark the approximately location of its underground facilities, if the operator believes that marking is necessary. The marking will take place within 2 days (excluding any holidays) of receiving notice. 2. If the underground facility operator wishes to have a person at the site during excavation the facility operator shall contact the excavator and advise of its intent to be present and determine the start time. WHAT TO DO IF AN UNDERGROUND FACILITY IS DAMAGED DURING EXCAVATION: In an excavation operation results in damage to an underground facility, the excavator shall immediately contact the underground facility operator to report the damage. If the operator's identify is not known, the excavator must contact a Notification Center to report the damage. Only the underground facility operator or authorized person may perform repairs to the facility. Excavator must delay backfilling until repairs have been made to the satisfaction of the operator.

NOTE: CIVIL AND CRIMINAL PENALTIES MAY BE LEVIED FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH “ONE-CALL” RULES:
