The Olympic Games

SUMMARY / BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE PROPOSED PROJECT

The goal of the Olympic movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind. The Olympic movement uses many symbols, most of them representing the Olympic ideals. The best known symbol is probably that of the Olympic Rings. These five intertwined rings represent the unity of five inhabited continents (with America regarded as one single continent). AEC-NET also works hard to promote mutual understanding, solidarity and fair play and to build bridges between European and Asian schools. The Olympic ideals are well illustrated by the Olympic Creed: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

This project is aimed at establishing and promoting an intercultural dialogue between European and Asian students focusing on the upcoming Olympic Games. We would like to spread the spirit of the Olympic movement, and to highlight such values as friendship, excellence and respect. We’re planning to go for the AEC-NET award but we are aware of the fact that the essential thing is not to win but to achieve tangible results through long-distance teamwork, and build respect and appreciation among our students along the way. We hope to foster communication and exchange of views among our students. We hope to encourage students to get engaged in regular physical exercises and to take record of their work-outs as well as to experience competitiveness (introLEAGUE competition and TeleOlympics07), but always in a manner that demonstrates mutual respect and camraderie with fellow participants. We also encourage them to express their views by responding to forum and survey questions and by reflecting to some relevant articles. We will do our best to spread the Olympic ideals: serving peace, understanding and friendship; promoting honest play, abiding by the rules and fairness.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION FROM ASIAN SCHOOLS/STUDENTS:

- students introduce themselves - give a virtual tour of their gyms and sport fields (using Mapwing) - showcasing school time-tables (highlighting PE lessons) - signing up for the introLEAGUE competition at Introplay - taking part in the TeleOlympics07 competition - answering forum and survey questions - designing and answering quiz questions - reflecting on some relevant articles - creating monthly presentations on their sports heroes/sports heroines/sports stars.
