Course title: Introduction to Egyptology: From Birth to Death

Course aims: What were the significant life transitions in Ancient Egypt, and how do they compare to those of today? What can we learn from the dress worn at particular life events? How was gender and disability treated?

Course description: Life transitions in Ancient Egypt: birth perils; going to school; engaging in puberty rituals. Marriage; committing adultery and getting divorced. Becoming a senior citizen. Death and burial; being ancestor worshipped.

Any prior knowledge or entry requirements? No prior knowledge is required, although a good understanding of English is essential.

Course content: what topics will the course cover? Theoretical underpinnings: life transitions and rites de passage. Birth and puberty rituals. Childhood, secondary, and higher education. Puberty rituals, marriage, adultery and divorce. Old age and retirement provision in Ancient Egypt. Death and burial. What clothing was worn at specific life events? How were women and the disabled treated? There will be a three hour class visit to the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology at University College London and to the nearby British Museum.

Learning outcomes: these are the intended outcomes and may be revised in discussion with the class. Students are encouraged to think about and identify their own individual outcomes. By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. explain five main life transitions in Ancient Egypt

2. describe the clothing worn at one specific life event

3. evaluate the position of women and the disabled in Ancient Egypt

4. relate life transitions in Ancient Egypt to those happening today

Reading and information sources: Is any reading/preparation essential or desirable? The essential book is by the tutor: Janssen, R.M. and Janssen, J.J., Growing up and Getting old in Ancient Egypt, Golden House, London 2007. also desirable reading is her: Hall, R., Egyptian Textiles. (Shire Egyptology 4), Shire Publications Ltd., Aylesbury 1986. Suggestions for progression to further study or for using the skills and knowledge gained: You should feel more confident to undertake further study, either with the WEA or with another provider. Details of further opportunities will be discussed in class.
