The New South Wales Department of Education is attempting to address the problem of childhood obesity and inactivity by encouraging students to become more active in their daily lives. The Department of Education is promoting the sport of table tennis in all schools as a fun, easy to play activity that is not affected by weather.

The sport of Table Tennis has been enjoyed by people for over 100 years. However, the activity and the equipment have remained basically the same. To encourage participation in schools, the Department of Education is looking for a company that can re-invent the sport of table tennis and make it more appealing to students by offering a more modern design of the sport. Activity 5 Table Tennis Design Ideas

An official table tennis table is rectangular in shape. It is played by either 2 or 4 players at a time. There are many examples of alternative table tennis designs.

Activity 6: Your task is to research the type of materials you will need to build your table tennis table

Table tennis tables are traditionally made from timber with metal or timber legs (supports). The type of timber used for the table can be particle board with a smooth surface layered on top, MDF or ply wood with a low-friction coating painted on it.

 Research and consider which type of timber will be the most appropriate for your table. Factors to consider include:

o most cost effective

o most durable

o bounce of the ball

o safety

Activity 7 Table Tennis Design Sketch

When designing a new product, limitations may be placed on the design and the designer, by the customer. These are a list of requirements that the customer wants met within the design of the product. Limitations MUST be followed as this is what the customer has requested.

The table below lists the limitations that apply to the design of table tennis tables for schools

 Your table must be made from wood (MDF or Ply)

 Your table must be supported by wooden trestle table legs

 You must design your own net configuration  The table must be able to be stored vertically and flat, and have no protruding parts

Activity 9 Table Dimensions

The dimensions of your table will need to be considered when determining the timber you purchase. For example will you need one sheet of timber or two sheets of timber and brace them together? Activity 9: Complete the following questions regarding the dimensions of your table.

Activity 10 Measuring Activity Levels

Activity 10: Measure, display and explain the changes in your heart rate, resulting from a game of table tennis.

Method: Participate in a game of table tennis. Take your heart rate at different intervals (before the game, 2 minutes into the game, 5 minutes into the game, end of the game, 1 minute after the game, 2 minutes after the game)

 Take your heart rate for 15 seconds and record. Multiply by 4 to get beats/minute and record.

 Following the experiment, graph your results on a Cartesian place.

 Explain why any changes in your heart rate occurred (muscles requiring oxygen to activate, oxygen carried in blood, heart responsible for pumping blood around the body, heart has to work harder when the muscles require more oxygen and blood to cope with exercise, decrease in need for oxygen when exercise is finished, fitter people have different shape graph to less fit people)

Activity 11 Budget When designing and building a new product, it is essential that your costs do not exceed your income. If your cost are greater than the income you earn, you will make a loss. All businesses are trying to make a profit. Therefore, your income must be greater than your expenses.

For this task you will be paid $22.50 per/hour. Keep a record of every hour you have spent designing and building your product. Record this in the income column.

AND

Keep a record of all the materials and equipment you have purchased. Record this in the expenses column.

At the conclusion of building your table, calculate the total of your income and expenses and determine if you have made a profit. Activity 11: Keep a record of your income and expenses in the table below.
