 LIBRARY ASSISTANT, SOKA UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA – IKEDA LIBRARY; ALISO VIEJO, CA – SEPTEMBER 2010-PRESENT O Assist patrons on the selection, organization, and interpretation of library materials.

O Answer reference questions in person or by telephone and conducts the needed research involved.

O Teach students various research strategies for multiple library databases while answering reference questions.

O Assist with collection development.

O Maintain professor reserve requests. This includes the physical and electronic organization of reserve requests, following copyright procedures, creating book sleeves for reserve requests.

O Maintain incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan (ILL) requests for borrowing libraries and our patrons.

O Assist Reference and Instruction Librarian with information literacy instruction classes when needed. This includes preparing for classes and team-teaching various information literacy instruction classes.

O Order supplies and books for librarians and process new books. This includes adding RFID identifiers to new material, creating and placing spine labels on new material, transferring temporary bibliographic records, and making sure incoming reserve and requested material are appropriately placed.

O Maintain and update the new books display in the main foyer.

O Shadowed and assisted the following Librarians at the Laguna Niguel Branch: Adult Librarian, Teen Librarian, and the Children’s Librarian.

O Learned about the inner-workings of a Public Library branch, including: how individual Library collections are acquired through budgets and developed through research of new and old materials.

O Sat at the reference desk after shadowing opportunity and answered patron questions by using the Library’s catalogue system and learned how to place holds for patrons.

O Learned skills to assist rude patrons and those disrupting the flow of the Library.

O Worked with the Teen Librarian to determine which editions to the Teen Graphic Novel Section should be made and which Graphic Novels should be removed due to lack of patron use.

O Assisted Teen Librarian in Teen Summer Reading Program events.

O Shadowed Children’s Librarian during Story Time and contributed at the end of the summer by reading books to children during Story Time under the Librarian’s supervision.

O Suggested singing Spanish educational songs during Story Time in-between books and implemented new activity during Story Time.

O Assisted Children’s Librarian once a week during Family Summer Program evening events for Library patrons. Ran one such evening in the Children’s Librarian absence.

O Performed research for Friends of the Library organization by researching value of antique, donated books to the organization. Created a spreadsheet for the organization of over one-hundred books researched for determined value.

 VOLUNTEER, MEMPHIS PUBLIC LIBRARY - CENTRAL BRANCH; MEMPHIS, TN - 2009-2010 O Volunteered six hours a week primarily in the Friends of the Library’s second-hand bookstore, Second Editions. All proceeds of Second Editions go to the Memphis Public Library System.

O Worked cash register, assisted patrons with titles, authors, subject matter, and directed them to the main Library in the absence of a particular work in the store.

O Determined necessary editions to shelves and navigated the basement storeroom of donated books in order to keep shelves stocked with a variety of materials.

O Acquired the necessary skills to deal with unruly and unsatisfied patrons diplomatically.

O Assisted wandering and sometimes disruptive children in the Library that made their way into Second Editions. This included asking the children about their interests and finding related reading material in the bookstore and the Library.

 VOLUNTEER, MEMPHIS ANIMAL SERVICES - MEMPHIS, TN - 2007-2008

O Volunteered three times a week at the Memphis Animal Shelter.

O Volunteer responsibilities included cleaning cages, feeing dogs and cats, bathing dogs, socializing with dogs to assist in their adoptability, and assisting visitors interested in adopting.

O Every Saturday assisted at adoption events hosted at the Petsmart in Memphis located on Poplar Avenue. At these events assisted the public in considering adoption as an alternative means of owning a pet.

 WORK STUDY STUDENT, RHODES COLLEGE; MEMPHIS, TN - 2008-2010

O Assisted professors in the Latin American Studies Department at Rhodes College.

O This included the review and formalization of the Latin American Studies Department’s objectives for current and prospective Latin American Study majors and minors; the creation, construction, and distribution of study-abroad and upcoming course flyers for the department, and the development of brochures to increase student interest in the study of Latin American culture, history, and politics.

 RESEARCH ASSISTANT, RHODES COLLEGE; MEMPHIS, TN - 2009-2010

O Research Assistant to Professor Elizabeth Pettinaroli, Assistant Professor, during the 2009- 2010 academic year.

O Assisted in developing an annotated bibliography of chorographies, specifically Civitates Orbis Terrarum, identify city views and maps in on-line databases and digital collections in the Unites States and overseas, and the compilation of a secondary bibliography of books and articles written on these visual texts.

O Familiarization with research methodologies in the fields of literary studies, history, and cartography, as well as the idiosyncrasies of information organizing and cataloguing in other countries.

 INTERN, THE LAW OFFICES OF DUNLAP, GRUBB, AND WEAVER - LEESBURG, VA - SUMMER 2008

O Preformed an array of legal tasks for two paralegals and six attorneys. This included research for old and new cases, deposition note-taking, discovery binder organization and preparation, case timeline development, client billing, and Loudon Circuit Court filing.

O At the conclusion of the summer, the internship entailed all the responsibilities of a paralegal at the law firm.
