Overview

Since 1974, The H & R Block Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life by responding to the needs of people and communities through thoughtful, innovative, and responsible philanthropy. The Foundation prefers to support projects and programs that strive for excellence, improve service for clients, and strengthens the organization. A major emphasis is placed on support of activities that serve underserved, low-income persons living in Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties in Missouri and Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas. The Foundation’s assets total approximately $60 million. Each year, about $2.5 million is provided to nonprofit organizations.

The Foundation’s primary program areas are:  Arts and Culture – Programs that improve access to the arts for all people.  Community Development – Projects that build stable neighborhoods and communities.  Education – Organizations that offer diverse learning opportunities for all ages.  Health and Human Services – High quality health and mental health services and youth development programs.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors meets quarterly to consider funding requests. At each meeting, the directors authorize specific contributions that are within the program guidelines. However, modifications may be necessary due to changing conditions; therefore, in unusual circumstances special contributions may be provided although they fall outside the program guidelines.

Grants are made only to organizations that are tax-exempt from federal income taxation pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) and that are not classified as private foundations within the code.

Grants for a wide-range of projects including capital improvements for construction, renovation, and equipment will be considered. The Foundation usually makes one-year grants however, in appropriate circumstances, will consider requests for up to five years.

Except in the most unusual circumstances, the Foundation does not make grants to:  Organizations that knowingly discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, marital status, or status as a veteran  Organizations that are not in compliance with laws and regulations that govern them  Individuals or businesses  Publications  Projects for which the Foundation must exercise expenditure responsibility  Single-disease agencies  Travel or conferences  Historic Preservation  Telethons, dinners, advertising, or other fund-raising activities  Animal related causes  Sports programs

1. Applications must include the Grant Proposal Summary, narrative, and the attachments. 2. Type using 12-point font and single-space all proposals. 3. Label attachments. 4. Submit only one copy. 5. Limit any materials not specifically requested.

Grant applications must be received in The H & R Block Foundation office by 4:00 p.m. on the following dates for consideration at the respective quarterly meeting:

A grant proposal should include the following items:

Proposal Summary: Approximately one-half page that briefly explain why your agency is requesting this grant, what impact you hope to achieve, how you will spend the funds if a grant is made, and what distinguishes your organization from other like-service providers.

Narrative – Five pages maximum Background – Describe the work of your agency, addressing each of the following:  A brief description of its history and mission.  The need or problem that your organization works to address and the population that your agency serves, including geographic location, socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and language.  Current programs, accomplishments, and challenges.  Your organization’s relationships – both formal and informal – with other organizations working to meet the same needs or providing similar services. Please explain how you differ from these other agencies and how you partner with these agencies. Funding Request – Describe your request by addressing each of the following: I. A statement of its primary purpose and the need or problem that you are seeking to address.  The population that you plan to serve and how this population will benefit from the project.  Strategies that you will employ to implement your project.  Details on the planned staffing for the project.  Anticipated length of the project.  How the project contributes to your organization’s overall mission.  A list of all sources of income (actual and prospective with amounts) and a line- item expense budget for the project. For capital projects please also include: o The name of the contractor and architect for the capital project. o The guaranteed maximum price for the project as stated in your construction contract. o The projected operating expense budgets for the organization, once construction and/or renovations are complete. Success Measures – Please state the measurable goals for the project and/or program that you have requested for support. Please explain how you will measure the effectiveness of your activities. Describe your criteria for a successful program and the results you expect to have achieved by the end of the funding period.

Attachments – Please provide the following organizational information: (label all attachments)  A list of your Board of Directors.  A copy of your most recent IRS letter indicating your agency’s tax-exempt status.  Audit: Most recent audited financial statement, management letter from the auditor, and notes to financial statements.  Financials: Most recent balance sheet and income statement.  Budget: Income and expense budget for the current year (if applicable, provide actuals).  Supporters: A list of foundation and corporate supporters and all other major sources of income, with amounts, aligned side-by-side, for your current and most recent fiscal year.  One paragraph of key staff.  Your most recent annual report (if available). No more than three examples of recent articles or evaluations of your organization (if appropriate).
