PUBLIC SCHOOLS DANCE FESTIVAL 2017
1. The Synergy Public Schools Dance Festival celebrates the performance of Dance by students – male and female – in Government Schools from, Kindergarten to Year 12 and exemplifies the outcomes of the K – 12 Dance Syllabus.
2. Performances should be of a standard suitable for an audience that will include students on school excursions, parents, senior Department of School Education and Training Personnel and Special Guests. The music, lyrics and choreographic style of the items being presented should be suited to the age, gender and stage of development of the participating students. Sensitivity should be displayed in the treatment of themes such as racism, sexism, drug misuse, violence etc. These themes are not suitable for junior students and should be treated in an abstract rather than representational way in senior years. N.B. Popular music is often overused by schools so try to avoid it.
3. Dances can be choreographed by D.O.E. Teachers and teacher’s with a D.O.E casual number. Dances should be developed as part of the school curriculum and adhere to Safe Dance Practice. Work of student choreographers within the school and with the supervision of a teacher within that school will also be considered for audition.
N.B. In this respect IT IS IMPERATIVE that “Safe Dance Practice” is followed. Students must have the technical capability to safely perform movements in the choreography.
Teachers are advised that the ability of students to consistently control dance skills is of paramount importance regarding safe dance practice. Students should be advised that heavy contact of the knees on the floor during falls is an issue concerning safe dance practice. Diminished control of the torso into and out of inverted movement over the course of the dance is also an issue.
4. It is recommended that the duration of dances be kept to 3 – 4 minutes for Primary Items and 4 - 6 minutes for High School items.
5. Only groups may perform. Groups must consist of a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 30 dancers for Primary Schools and 25 for High Schools.
Maximum of four items per school may audition. No more than 4 items per school (maximum of 2 teachers per item) and a limit of 2 items per primary teacher and 3 items per high school teacher and/or choreographer can apply for audition. Students will be permitted to perform in no more than two (2) items for primary and no more than three (3) items for high school. On the “participating student form” the names of the students who will be performing twice MUST be highlighted. Regional Ensembles and Cross-Campus groups will be exempt from this guideline as this allows students to perform with their school groups as well. 6. Items will be selected for the Festival on the basis of quality and style of dance to ensure variety in the Program. Unsafe dance practices will not be accepted, but choreographers will be given the opportunity to change any minor movements causing concern if the item scores highly in other areas.
7. The stage space is approximately 10 m deep and 11 m wide. Due to limited wing space, crossovers are not permitted. It is recommended that the duration of items be kept to 3 – 4 minutes for primary schools and 4 – 6 minutes for high schools.
8. Costumes should be thoughtfully chosen and suitable for an educational promotion. In designing your costumes be mindful of plunging necklines and length of dresses / skirts. No mid riffs. Boys should be suitably covered at the top as well.
9. Simple lighting is available. Please consider the colour of the costumes.
10. Good quality recording from an original source must be used when recording music. Music recorded from other sources is distorted and interference noises are heard when played over The Evan Theatre sound system. All music must be edited prior to submission.
11. The audition panel will be comprised of Primary and Secondary Teachers who are members of the Synergy Public Schools Dance Festival Committee.
12. Groups will only be accepted for participation in the Festival on the condition that they will be under direct supervision of the nominated supervising teacher AT ALL TIMES.
13. The Synergy Public Schools Dance Festival Committee has the responsibility for the organisation of the Synergy Dance Festival.
