Purpose of the role:
To organise and promote sport participation opportunities with the aim to increase participation levels within the University community.
Main areas of responsibility:
To develop, organise and promote sport programmes, ensuring a commercial element to sports development is achieved.
To identify, induct and develop student sport activators whilst supporting, motivating and managing these volunteers to assist with programme delivery.
To undertake and utilise market research to evaluate impact and identify new programmes and areas to increase sports participation.
To liaise, as appropriate, with other professional sports services, University departments and external agencies to obtain resources and best value, including seeking sponsorship, concessionary rates and coaching support where available.
To work with the Student Union VP Student Activities & Events to ensure the interests of student sport are represented at various sports and student led organisations.
To assist a wide range of student clubs and offer a professional service to those clubs for the benefit of students across all sites.
To take responsibility for implementing systems to ensure the University’s duty of care for those participating in sports activities is met; developing and monitoring club and activity risk assessments to ensure that these comply with best practice. To ensure, through appropriate training and provision of materials, that all participants are aware of the University’s responsibility to Health and Safety issues at events and the safe use of equipment at sports events.
To draft material for and update the department’s online media.
To represent the University at internal and local, regional and national sports development meetings and groups, as deemed appropriate by the line manager.

Essential criteria A, I, E
Knowledge Knowledge of the organisation and administration A, I, E of sport. Knowledge of sports development, participation programme promotion and methods to evaluate impact. Clear, concise and oral communication. Able to provide information to, and communicate and liaise effectively with a wide range of service users and external contacts to deliver required service standards. A sound understanding of UK higher and/or further education and the issues facing students. Knowledge of sport development linked to students. Ability to plan and schedule immediate work programme and to meet objectives on own initiative (supported by line manager)
Qualifications No specific qualification required Experience Specific experience of developing sports A, I initiatives, running sporting events and monitoring and evaluating effectiveness.
Managing people Experience of supporting, motivating and A, I managing volunteers and of working with sports clubs. Ability to support instructors and coaches delivering sports development programmes. Technical/work Relevant understanding of Health and Safety A, I, E based skills legislation and practice, particularly with regard to lifting, moving and using equipment and using display screen equipment. Knowledge of relevant systems and software, including databases, Excel and Word. Good numeracy skills.
Other Able to work flexible and unsociable hours as A requirements and when required. The role will require regular travel to the university’s other sites with sporting equipment and therefore a current driving license will be essential.
Desirable Knowledge of sport development linked to A, I students. Coaching/officiating qualifications. First Aid qualification. Able to use IT graphics packages / photography skills. Educated to A level standard or equivalent. Ideally, given the frequency of inter-site travel involved in the role, if you are a car owner or are a member of a car club you would be prepared to use it/the car club for university business (all expenses would be reimbursed); however other arrangements (such as provision of a hire car) will be made if/when this is not possible.
Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary. This is a full-time post and is fixed-term until 30 June 2018 to cover maternity leave within the department. Annual leave entitlements are shown in the table below and increase after 5 years’ service. In addition, to the eight Bank Holidays, there are University discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. All leave, including bank holidays and discretionary days, is pro-rated for part time employees.
