DISCLOSURE STATEMENT Secondary Math III 2017-18 Lisa Goff Email: [email protected] blog: http://blog.wsd.net/lgoff

Welcome to Secondary Math III. I am looking forward to an exciting year. It will be a great year as we work together to become better mathematicians. Knowledge is Power! In this course you will continue to improve your algebra skills while gaining hands on experience with graphing calculators. We will be learning where and when math is used in the real world and explore interesting topics. We will discover that math is relevant and exciting and how it is connected to other subject areas. We will build on your skills from Secondary Math II.

GRADING PERCENTAGES: GRADING SCALE:

40% Assignments, Activities, 100 - 93 A 76 - 73 C Notes, Bell Questions 92 - 90 A- 72 - 70 C- 60% Tests & Quizzes 89 - 87 B+ 69 - 67 D+ 86 - 83 B 66 - 63 D 82 - 80 B- 62 - 60 D- 79 - 77 C+ 59 - 0 F

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS:

1. A Graphing Calculator (TI-83 or TI-84) is highly recommended and will be used on a daily basis. Although many cell phones are capable of using a graphing calculator application, you may not use these on any test or quiz. You may rent a calculator from the school for $30. See Mrs. Heninger room #18. 2. Paper, pencil and notebook for assignments and notes. 3. A Composition Notebook or spiral notebook that can be used all year for notes. Please get one to use exclusively for math.

Assignments:

1. Must be labeled with name, date, period, and section in the upper right hand corner. 2. Assignments are due and full credit when we grade them in class. Usually that will be two class periods after being assigned. Check my blog when absent. 3. Students should be prepared each day to discuss and ask questions on the previous day’s homework. 4. All work must be shown in in an orderly, organized fashion for any credit to be given. If work is not shown, the highest grade that can be earned is 1/10. 5. Assignments graded during an absence are due upon return. 6. Credit will be given based on completeness and correctness. 7. Late assignments that are turned in before the Test date may receive up to 50% credit. No assignments for any unit will be accepted later than the day of the test.

Tests:

1. Unit tests will be given approximately 2 or 3 times each quarter. No cell phones may be used during or on the test. 2. There will be No Test Retakes; WHS math Department policy. 3. Test corrections may be done within 2 weeks of the original test date during student tutoring time Monday afternoon or after school, my time and schedule permitting. Tests will stay in the classroom and must be done with teacher supervision. Notes may be used on the corrections. Up to 50% of missed points can be redeemed. 4. Quizzes will be given randomly throughout the grading period and usually cannot be corrected.

Notes:

Students will keep a notebook dedicated to math only. Students are expected to take legible and organized notes about class discussions each day. They will include the section number, vocabulary, graphs, and examples. These will be turned in at the end of each chapter on the test day. If a student is absent, they are required to get a copy of the notes from someone else in the class and can bring them in to review with me. Watch my blog and the assignment board in class. When absent, check the blog to see what we worked on.

Bell Quizzes:

1. Students will do the bell question in their notebook as they enter class. If the door is closed, then please wait outside quietly while we complete the bell question. 2. Bell quizzes will be given most days and cannot be made up. A few extras will be included in case of occasional absences. However, frequent absences and tardies can take their toll. Be careful.

Attendance Credit:

I fully endorse the district attendance policy and will enforce all provisions of the Weber High School attendance policy. For the purposes of attendance credit, a student is not tardy if he/she is in his/her assigned seat when the bell rings. Tardies cannot be made up.

Citizenship:

The usual Citizenship grade for students in my class is an S, which means the student usually demonstrates acceptable behavior. Citizenship grades will be based on teacher observation of the following behaviors: appropriate and kind classroom behavior, being prepared with the necessary materials (paper, pencil or pen, the textbook, calculator); raising his/her hand to ask questions or make appropriate comments; not disturbing others; paying attention to (and taking notes) on discussions and lectures; working on assignments in class when time is given; not bringing food or drink into the classroom; not defacing books, desks, chairs, rulers, scissors, colored pencils or any property belonging to me, the school, or other people; using appropriate classroom language; staying in his/her seat until the bell rings to be excused; behaving respectfully toward other students, the teacher and substitute teachers. A student may bring a water bottle to class. All behavior issues will be documented on the discipline tracker.

General Information:

1. I will be available before and after school on most days. You may also contact me through email at [email protected] 2. You may access the portal at wsdinfo.net. 3. Math based extra credit will be given at random throughout the year. All assignments must be turned in, in order to receive any extra credit. Extra credit may not affect the over all grade by more than one grade step (i.e. B- to B). 4. Students may use the hall pass twice per quarter. If a student has medical issues that result in this policy being a problem for him/her, parents, please notify me by email with a general explanation of why this might be necessary. 5. All cell phones and other electronic devices will be turned off during class. Calculator apps may be used on assignments, however they may not be used on a test or quiz. No texting or social medial on cell phones or electronic devices will be tolerated during class time. Devices will be confiscated and given to the office if they are used/abused. Calculators are to be used for math and not games. They may be confiscated if they are used in a distracting way in the classroom. Phones, calculators and other electronic devices may possibly be used in classroom discussions only at the teacher’s direction. Parents, please do not contact your child in class through these devices. If contact is necessary, please go through the office as student devices will be turned off. 6. Hats should be left in lockers and may not be worn in the classroom. 7. Video of students for educational purposes may be taken and posted on the portal, blogs, or school websites. 8. Under exceptional conditions the above rules may be adjusted at the discretion of the teacher.

Parents, please encourage your child to come in and get help, or even to just check in once-in-a- while with me. Feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Homework and weekly assignment schedule will be posted on my blog. Please use the My Student site to track your current grade.
