ChemDraw Assignment C343 Summer 2012

Introduction: One cannot effectively communicate concepts in organic chemistry without using structural representations. A significant portion of your grade in this course will be based on your ability to communicate what you have learned or discovered in lab. To help you with this communication, a software program called ChemDraw (ChemBioDraw) has been developed and purchased by IU for your use. Since you will be using the program throughout the course, this assignment is designed to help you learn how to use it. The software is easy to use, but the more time you spend exploring available options and practicing using the program, the easier it will be to properly complete your future lab reports.

Accessing the program: To complete this assignment, you must use a copy of ChemDraw. If you wish to install it on your own computer, IU has purchased a site license for this software, so it is free for any IU student to download and use. (I believe you must be logged on to an IU network to do this.) Use the link below to download the program. Download ChemDraw: (optional) 1. Connect to the link http://itg.chem.indiana.edu/index.php?page=software and click “Download” 2. Click “IUB download site”, then Enter your IU email address. You must use your IU address to be able to use the site license. 3. Follow the directions to complete your download of ChemBIODraw Ultra 12.0.

It is a great program for chemistry and biology majors, but it is big. A second option is to use one of the computers in room 006 or 046 of the Chemistry building. These computers already have ChemDraw installed. Find it by going to programs and searching “Departmentally Sponsored” then “CHEM”, then “ChemBioOffice 2010.” In the office suite there are many programs, but we will only use ChemBioDraw in this course.

Help in learning ChemDraw: A good way to learn ChemDraw is simply to open it up and start trying to draw structures. After you get familiar, you may also choose to go to the help menu and work through the Tutorials.

Your Report: Use ChemDraw to make these four items, then cut and paste them into a Word document. 1. Reproduce the Abstract Scheme from a primary literature source. Your AI will give you the reference of the Journal of Organic Chemistry article, and you will access it through the Chemistry library Electronic Journal Center at this link: http://www.libraries.iub.edu/index.php?pageId=5226 You will use ChemDraw to make an exact reproduction of the scheme from the abstract of the given article. You do not have to include the words of the abstract. 2. Draw a natural product from a primary literature source. Your AI will give you the reference of the journal. 3. Draw a multistep reaction scheme provided by your AI. 4. Draw a multistep mechanism of a reaction provided by your AI. Finally, add the Academic Honesty statement found on the following page to your assignment and sign it. Academic honesty:

Assignments like these are easy to plagiarize due to their “cut and paste” nature. Therefore, you must write the following statement at the bottom of your report and sign after the statement.

“Every drawing and answer contained in this report was completed by me alone. I did not use any work done by any other individual in this report. I understand that if I break this agreement, I will receive a zero for this report and further disciplinary action will be discussed with my Dean.”

Grading: You will lose points if you do not complete every section of this assignment. You will also receive minor deductions (1/2 or 1 point) for every instance of sloppiness or inaccuracy in your drawings, so take time to do them well.
