IEE 431 / 541 – Engineering Administration - Fall 2011 – Line Numbers 84983 / 87597 / 87606 - - Monday and Wednesday – 5:00 until 6:15 pm - BYAC 210 - Course Overview, Directions and Timelines - Revision 3 – October 2011 Welcome to IEE 431 / 541. Here is the plan for the semester:  All of my charts are posted on Blackboard for this course. . All of the students should have access to the Power Point slides and all the readings I will require.  The course syllabus follows. This syllabus contains the course description, learning objectives and recommended timeline for the semester.

Course Description:  This course addresses the modern requirements to administer the engineering function.  Administer in this class can be any activity that: . Deals with leading the engineering organization or . Deals with leading the engineering process.  This course will address both!  And this is NOT just about manufacturing ~ as our service economy grows in Arizona we will be called upon to support the bank teller, the retail sales clerk and the computer technician.

Prerequisite Topics:  I am going to assume you have had the following exposure:  Analytical thinking capability.  Introduction to Engineering and the principles of a systems approach.  Introduction to Engineering Economy and the principles of economics.  Minor awareness of how a business operates, how things get done!

Learning Objectives:  The course will have the following Desired Learning Objectives:  Ability to define and apply the principles of leadership  Ability to construct a learning organization  Understanding of Core Competencies and their strategic contribution  Management principles for effective organizations  Ability to understand and apply the New Product Development process  Strategic metrics associated with Strategic Core Processes  Project Management principles and practices  Systems Engineering principles and practices  Deep understanding of how to execute to the plan. Grading: For the Undergrads in IEE 431: The course has a total of 250 points (2 quizzes at 100 points and one formal article review presentation at 50 points) I would expect that any student receiving more than 89.5% would get an “A”, more than 79.5% would get a “B”, more than 69.5% would get a “C”, etc.

For the Graduate Students in IEE 541: The course has a total of 300 points (2 quizzes at 100 points, one formal article review presentation at 50 points, and one formal Literature Review of a topic of your choosing related to this course at 50 points). I would expect that any student receiving more than 89.5% would get an “A”, more than 79.5% would get a “B”, more than 69.5% would get a “C”, etc.

I have a very strict policy on individual work publication. IF, for any reason, I am able to confirm that cheating is being conducted in the exams or plagiarism is found in any reports, then all parties will be given 0 points for that exam or paper, respectively. I would highly recommend that you take this policy seriously, because I do!!
