GUIDELINES TO PROMOTE POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND BEHAVIOUR IN EARLY YEARS ESTABLISHMENTS
Perth and Kinross Council aims to create a positive ethos within nursery schools and classes managed by Education and Children’s Services. The development of positive relationships and behaviour and the promotion of inclusive practices is part of getting it right from the start.
Staff will take account of the whole school policy and will: Treat children and adults with dignity, respect and patience. Place relationships at the heart of learning. Value each child as an individual and take account of the circumstances and environmental factors which may impact on their relationships and behaviour. Create a nurturing ethos where children know that they matter. Be positive role models and solve difficulties in a friendly and constructive manner. Give consistent praise and encouragement to children when they behave well and redirect children when help is needed to make better choices. Encourage children to think about how their behaviour affects others and help them to take responsibility for putting things right using restorative approaches. Provide an environment with opportunities to listen and talk about issues and solve problems. Develop emotional literacy and encourage children to focus on how others are thinking and feeling to build positive relationships and behaviour. Work in partnership with parents/carers to share and develop positive relationships and behaviour strategies to use in the nursery and at home. Plan and evaluate practice using the eight indicators on the well-being wheel to ensure strategies support the smooth transition within and between settings as part of getting it right with relationships and behaviour.
When additional help and support is required: Where a child has an additional support need, strategies for managing relationships and behaviour will be personalised and targeted to meet individual needs. Staff will work closely with parents/carers and other professionals involved with the child/family and consult with the child where appropriate to ensure they contribute to decisions that directly affect them. Staff will seek advice from relevant agencies as necessary to bring about change.
Should a child’s behaviour be giving cause for concern staff will consult with their line manager, parents/carers and other professionals to identify causes and to agree strategies to ensure a better outcome for the child and their family.
