Opening -Prepare the Learner Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Show students the cover of the book. What is this character? He seems kind of funny? He is a monster! What do you know about monsters?

Experience: How will I build background knowledge and common schema?

Body-Teach the Content with Rigor Instruct: How will I teach the content and build competency?

As you are reading ask students what they know about monsters. Write down on a whiteboard, smartboard, etc a few characteristics of monsters.

Your white board might look like this

K W L Monsters Why do monsters look funny? Monsters can sing songs. have claws like to roar have tails Have students come together and reassess

Anything else they would like to tell us about monsters? Reaffirm their answers by putting them on the board.

As students are coloring their monster page, take around the library book and your title finder. Have each student use the title finder to find the title on the book. When they are done tell them good job! If students are having a hard time finding the title I encourage them to look for the biggest words on the page.

Use Monster Goose Flipchart! to Compare Mother Goose and Monster Goose poems!

Which characters do they like most!

Once you are done comparing, Show students how to change words of the poem to be more monster like.

For example--change the words sheep and tail in the following poem to monster and claws.
