It’s Time For a New Approach to Math Intervention
Many educators are frustrated by the limited options they have for helping students who struggle with math. Research has shown that what holds students back is not only a lack of knowledge, but also the misconceptions they have developed over the years. For students to succeed, interventions must not only build skills and problem solving, but also identify and address misconceptions.
America’s Choice math interventions do all of this and more.
Students struggling with math have different levels of need. Some can be addressed with short-term interventions; others require more sustained and intensive attention. That is why America’s Choice offers a tiered set of programs. You can also view how our math intervention programs fit in the Response to Intervention (RtI) model.
“We had excellent results with Mathematics Navigator and Ramp-Up Mathematics.”
— Nilene Quave, Principal, Pearl River Central Junior School, Pearl River, MS
Grades 2-10
Mathematics Navigator is a short-term, tier-two intervention program that helps students repair gaps and misconceptions—and master concepts, skills, and problem solving that are critical for success in algebra, geometry, and other higher-level courses. Navigator modules are 20 days in length and augment the on-grade curriculum with 35-45 minutes of targeted instruction, delivered during, before or after school, or in summer school.
A modular intervention that targets and fills critical gaps and clears up misconceptions in mathematics understanding to help students in grades 2 and above catch up.
Mathematics Navigator works unlike any other available intervention because it:
Identifies and addresses the math misconceptions that research shows holds students back. Builds skills, problem solving and the conceptual understanding needed for success in algebra Targets student needs using diagnostic screeners and discrete 20-day modules Includes pre-tests, checkpoints, and post-tests that help teachers differentiate instruction and check progress. Provides extensive online professional development for teachers to better support striving students Includes support for English Language Learners and special needs students. Offers student editions in Spanish for all elementary modules Works effectively and produces sustained results during the school day, after school, and in summer school Provides Internet-based assessments and reporting through ARO

Ramp-Up Mathematics is a year-long, comprehensive acceleration system specifically targeted to boost the performance of secondary students who are two or more years below grade level in mathematics. Ramp-Up to Pre-Algebra and Ramp-Up to Algebra are designed to accelerate learning, raise test scores, break the cycle of failure, and establish a pattern of achievement. Ramp-Up provides a replacement curriculum and expands the standard period to 90 minutes of instruction.
A rigorous, yearlong math intervention course that accelerates the learning of middle and high school students who are far behind grade level
Ramp-Up Mathematics is a proven, research-based program that gives struggling students more time—up to 90 minutes daily—to learn, practice, discuss, and think about math. It includes
Instruction in the core skills, problem solving and concepts Classroom management “rituals and routines” that provide more instructional time and help teachers effectively differentiate instruction An approach to arithmetic and algebra fundamentals, such as linear notation, that smooths the transition to Algebra I A comprehensive assessment system
Two Ramp-Up Mathematics courses target student needs.
Ramp-Up to Pre-Algebra prepares middle school students to complete Algebra I by the end of 8th grade. Ramp-Up to Algebra helps 8th- and 9th-graders catch up in math and learn the foundational concepts they must understand to enter college or prepare for a career.
Both of these innovative programs
Engage students in math and help them become better math learners —a skill they will take to future math classes and challenges Focus on “rich” problems—not superficial coverage of unnecessary topics—to deepen understanding of the concepts critical for success in algebra Create a language-rich environment for reading, writing, and talking about mathematics. Support ELL and special needs students Provide extensive high-quality professional development that gives teachers solid grounding in an accelerated approach so they can help their struggling learners

“The quality of our student work has improved tremendously since we’ve used Ramp-Up Mathematics. The students know and understand more mathematics; they are much more engaged in the learning and thus they are willing to put more effort into their work. They are also learning to take more responsibility for learning. I think they have more of an investment in what they do.”

School Results
In a rigorous, randomized study—the “gold standard” in research—students at Tylertown Upper Elementary School in Mississippi showed statistically significant gains of up to 41 percentage points between the pre- and post-tests on two Mathematics Navigator modules.
Students at Sparks High School in Nevada made statistically significant gains on a Mathematics Navigator module, moving from 32 percent correct on the pre-test to 69 percent correct on the post-test.
Special education students at Chet's Creek Elementary School in Florida made dramatic, statistically significant gains with Mathematics Navigator. In one module, student performance increased from 49 percent correct on the pre-test to 90 percent correct on the post-test—putting students within reach of the regular curriculum.
Students at Waianae Elementary School in Hawaii nearly doubled their performance in 20 days, moving from 40 percent correct on the pre-test and 78 percent correct on the post-test of one Mathematics Navigator module.
District Results
In many schools, across many modules, students in the Bethel School District in Washington are achieving statistically significant results with Mathematics Navigator—and preparing to succeed on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning in Mathematics.
State Results
New Mexico selected Mathematics Navigator to help students—particularly those in targeted populations of English language learners, American Indians, and special education students— improve student achievement. Students throughout the state are achieving statistically significant gains on many Mathematics Navigator modules. FASTT Math by Scholastic
Math Fact Fluency in 10 Minutes a Day!
The FASTT Math intervention program uses the research-validated FASTT system (Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching with Technology) to help all students develop fluency with basic math facts. FASTT Math assesses all students to uncover fluency gaps and to establish a baseline of fluency for each student. Then, FASTT Math automatically differentiates instruction in customized, 10-minute daily sessions.
FASTT Math ensures that all students, regardless of their fluency level, build the long-lasting fluency they will need to tackle higher-order math.
FASTT Math helps all your students achieve math fact fluency – and build the confidence in mathematics they need to succeed.
Grades 2 and up Covers basic 0-9 and 0-12 addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts English and Spanish Flexible implementation designed to support any curriculum or schedule 10-minute instructional sessions Proven effective
FASTT Math delivers targeted, differentiated instruction to meet student needs. Every student has a unique individualized learning experience, building fluency at the pace and level adapted specifically for that student.
Through his research with struggling students Dr. Ted Hasselbring identified a need for a targeted math fact fluency intervention. Discouraged with drill and practice programs, Hasselbring developed the FASTT Math approach which helps students establish a lasting mental link between the facts and their answers.
The FASTT Math approach has been validated over several years of research with both non-struggling and struggling students. In the study, depicted on the right, math delayed students who used the FASTT Math approach increased their fluency by more than 70%. Those students who received no intervention showed no growth.
Research validated and classroom tested.
