Job Purpose/Summary

This post is a senior clinical nursing role which provides clinical leadership and professional line management of the Nursing Service, acting as a supportive and flexible resource to enable the implementation of the Marie Curie Nursing Service strategy within a defined region.

The post holder will work alongside the Regional Manager in developing the Nursing Service in the local area based on local needs and manages his/her team in order to ensure that the right workforce is available to deliver quality care to patients.

He/she will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams, District Nursing teams, the Marie Curie referral centre, Senior Nurses, Marie Curie Nurses and Health Care Assistants in order to provide a proactive and consistent approach to delivering patient care.

Accountabilities (Duties and Responsibilities)

Service  To take responsibility for the operational management of the Marie Curie Nursing Service

 To take responsibility for the line management of the nursing staff within a defined geographical area.  To take responsibility for workforce planning and skill mix requirements to ensure the safe and effective provision of nursing care to meet patient and carer needs. Working along side the Regional Manger and Business and Service Development to analyse service needs and capacity, taking appropriate action to ensure the delivery of safe care.

 To act as the clinical voice for Marie Curie Cancer Care in the defined area by participating in local NHS palliative care strategy/End of life groups and networks to ensure awareness and recognition of the contribution of the MCNS, provide expert advice and information as necessary and to identify future development opportunities.

Assessment and prioritisation

 To be responsible for working with the referring professional or client in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care by the Marie Curie Nursing Service.

 Provide the clinical link between referrers, the Marie Curie referral centre and Marie Curie Nurses in order to provide appropriate packagers of care according to patient need and service capacity.

Care planning and delivery

 To support the implementation of the Marie Curie Nursing Service strategy by working with the national teams and where necessary supporting other colleagues within Caring Services to deliver key targets.

 To be responsible for identifying the clinical needs of patients and families, providing an overview of the caseload so that the right workforce can be deployed. This will include working with the referral centre staff in order to make decisions on prioritisation of care and the skill mix required, and take responsibility for agreeing the communication of these decisions to other healthcare professionals involved in the patients care.

 To be responsible for ensuring nursing team members are recruited and managed in line with MCCC employment policies and procedures. This may include leading the recruitment and selection process and leading at investigations or disciplinary hearings as required.

Clinical Leadership & quality

 To line manage the nursing team within a defined geographical area including Senior Nurses within the area and to provide clinical leadership. This may include advice regarding planning and organising their workload according to clinical need.

 To take responsibility for ensuring that RNs work within the NMC code of professional conduct and the agreed competency framework, and that HCAs work within the MCCC competency framework and MCCC code of conduct.

 To take responsibility for determining the clinical education and training needs of the workforce and working closely with the practice educators to ensure the regional training plan is delivered.  To take responsibility for ensuring that there is a supervision framework in place for all staff delivering care to patients and families within their area.  To adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct in the performance and management of nursing duties and to be professionally accountable for practice and managerial issues.

 To take responsibility for keeping up to date with current issues in nursing and changes to practice in order to ensure their own ongoing personal and professional development.

 To take responsibility for ensuring that the Nursing Service meets agreed quality assurance standards.

 Contribute to developing systems to support user feedback and take responsibility for the implementation of such systems within the Nursing Service.

 To assume responsibility for the management of clinical incidents and complaints within their area and work within the Charity’s clinical governance framework in order to achieve targets.

 To lead in the audit process for their area and participate in research as required.

Additional responsibilities

 In association with the Regional Manager and other senior colleagues, to be responsible for project management in specified areas to improve the delivery of care.

 In association with the Regional Manager take responsibility for ensuring the health and safety of staff working within a defined area.

 Attend regional & national meetings as required.

 Undertake activities from time to time representing Marie Curie Cancer Care to outside groups or the general public.

 Travelling will be required and may be extensive, depending on area. Some overnight stays will be required for meetings and training purposes.

 Act up in the absence of the Regional Manager as required.

 Participate in the on-call rota as required. General
