The Kite Runner Teacher Performance Task

You are going to be the teacher and discussion director for one or two chapters of The Kite Runner as your last performance task. For this task, you will need to prepare a power point with questions, vocabulary, and a few other items to teach to the rest of the class.

Your power point will contain the following elements in an order that is logical to your presentation:

Summary: You will provide a brief summary of the chapter’s important developments to remind students of the reading of the day.

Discussion: You will create 5 open ended discussion questions (more than one correct answer) that you will pose to the class. You will be responsible for choosing the students to answer, clarifying their answers, and prompting debate among the class, so prepare your questions with that in mind.

Visual Imagery: You will provide a visual of a significant element of the chapter and an explanation for your choice. The visual could be a map of a journey, a picture of a place in the chapter, an object that is significant in the chapter , or a video clip of importance.

Vocabulary: You will identify 5 vocab words worth learning from your chapter. Each vocab word needs to be presented with the original sentence from the text and a correct definition. Your students should be told how they might use the vocab word in their own speech or writing.

In addition to English vocabulary, you are responsible for highlighting the foreign words in your chapter with the sentence from the text and the correct definition.

As the teacher, you are expected to use the correct pronunciation for all of these words. Do some research, ask for help, and/or use Google translator.

Connections: As you begin your discussion, you will be expected to make a connection between your chapters and the previous chapter. Your chapter may be a continuation of an episode, or it may be a complete change. Your students need to know how your part fits into the previous lesson. Being absent the day before your presentation is not going to help you make a smooth connection, so plan to be here.

You will also be responsible for connecting your chapter to one of the major themes in the text. How does your chapter build the theme? Finally, you must inform your students how you connected this chapter to an experience of your own, an experience from our world, or an experience from another book we have read this year.

Project Title: Select a significant quote from your chapter and use it as your title slide. Punctuate it properly and be prepared to explain your choice.

Student Assessment: To measure how your students did, you will create a 5 point quiz with open-ended answers. You may choose 5 short answer questions or one brief 5 point essay that has 2-3 parts or questions.

You will collect and correct the quizzes, reporting and recording the grades on the grade sheet within 2 days of your presentation. Graded quizzes will be given to me for record keeping.

Teacher Assessment: You will be evaluated on the presentation based on the attached rubric. You are expected to be prepared and professional.

Do’s Don’ts______Make notes for yourself. Wing it; your students need you. Rehearse your presentation. Wait until the last minute to prepare

Proofread your materials. Be absent the day before or the day of your presentation

Pay attention and contribute to all presentations Let your classmates flounder; discuss!

Students who are uncooperative or off task (on the phone, for example) will have points deducted from their presentations and/or be referred to the office. The Kite Chapter Date Points Runner Teaching Rubric
