Housepoint winners last week – LIONS – well done!

Hi everyone

Big News! We were delighted, and extremely proud, to see our name in the Sunday Times this week. The Key Stage 2 Sats in 2013 were averaged to produce this ranking and the top 200 state primary schools were listed, where we appeared at number 128. I would like to say a huge thank you to all children, parents, staff and the enormous list of volunteers who have all helped towards this success.

It has been another busy week around school. Thank you to everyone who managed to come to parents’ evening and apologies to Year 2 parents but Mrs Gow will be in touch very soon.

The cricket club kindly allow us to park in their car park to help reduce the amount of parking around the school each day. Sadly, they are finding that one or two vehicles are being parked so that they damage the edges and surrounds of the car park. As repairs can be expensive, could I please ask that you check where your wheels are when you park.

After much updating, Mr Lewis has finished the new maths calculation policy and this is attached to this newsletter.

Kind regards

Linda Clayton

CHILDREN IN NEED – thank you for your donations – you have helped to raise £252.92 so far. This Friday, some children in Year 4 are baking cakes to sell at break. As it is Fair Trade day too, your child will need to choose to either buy Fair Trade or cakes (not both!). CHRISTMAS CARD DESIGN WINNERS

Well done to all the children who designed a Christmas card. They were all absolutely lovely and we have chosen one from each class to use as our school Christmas card. All the designs have been sent off and you should receive your packs before we break up. The following children’s designs were chosen:-

Reception Jessica Ward Year 1 India Valentine Year 2 Matty & Joseph Wright (joint card) Year 3 George & Lucy Holding (joint card) Year 4 Hugo Mellodey-Hayes Year 5 Grace Parkin Year 6 Matthew Turner

BEGINNERS FRENCH – LE CLUB FRANCAIS

Our new beginners will start their French lessons this Thursday. They are held in the library. Children should go into the hall for their dinner at 12 noon and then straight to French.

Hooray! The Book Fair is here!

Following the amazing success of last year’s book fair we are pleased to announce that - the Scholastic book fair has arrived at school again for 4 days only!

Every evening Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday after school from 3.30pm – 5pm the book fair will be open for you to come with your child to browse and buy from the extensive range of titles. The book fair is the perfect opportunity to encourage your child to read and find new and engaging authors. The books and gifts also make great stocking fillers or Christmas gifts. A brochure with some of the titles has been sent home tonight for you to look at. You could send your order in on the form OR even better come in and have a look at the real book. Every class, on Thursday, will be given some browsing time to look at the different books and authors.

On Friday morning from 8am – 8.40am we are holding our special Storytime Breakfast where, this year, there may be a special guest appearance too! Children (accompanied by an adult please) may come and listen to stories, watch story videos, have a croissant and a drink of juice and look or purchase books from the fair!

Remember children; the competition for your Lego design (why St John’s loves reading OR your favourite book) is also due in on Friday morning. Prizes will be awarded at Monday’s assembly.

Thank you for supporting this event. All commission from the book fair goes to buying new books for our classes and library so please come along. Mrs Gow and Mrs Ashcroft.

YEAR 6 BIKEABILITY REMINDER! DAY 2 – TUESDAY 25 NOVEMBER – come in uniform and bring appropriate warm clothing. Please also ensure the bike is roadworthy. CHORLEY IN THE GREAT WAR – MUGS FOR SALE Mr Ingham, Frank’s dad, is coming into school next term to talk to children about World War 1. He will bring some exhibits and will focus on Chorley and the surrounding areas. Further details will be given next year but we have some mugs for sale for £5.00 if any families would like to purchase one before Christmas. Mrs Lormor will have one on display in the office if you would like to have a look. Cash or cheques to “Chorley in the Great War” will be accepted. Have a look at their web site for more information at www.chorleyinthegreatwar.org.uk
