DETAIL: My Chemical Romance will be receiving the Chris Greicius Celebrity Award from the Make-A- Wish Foundation® of America on Friday April 4, at The Warfield in San Francisco. The Chris Greicius Award is presented each year by the Foundation’s Celebrity and National Sports Program to recognize actors, athletes, musicians or other public figures that rise to the occasion to support Make-A-Wish and do so in an amazing way. My Chemical Romance was selected based on voting from all 67 Make-A-Wish chapters in the United States.

The rock group, which is currently on tour, has granted seven wishes in the past three years. The first child who wished to meet the group is Alfredo Javier (AJ) Cruz, from Hollister. AJ met the band in 2005 while they were on tour in the Bay Area. When AJ, his mother and best friend arrived at Pier 30/32 (Warped Tour) in July 2005 they were escorted to the band’s tour bus, where band members Frankie and Gerard hopped out of the bus and invited everyone inside for a tour. After spending some quality time alone with the group, AJ was invited backstage to watch the show. During the concert the band dedicated a song to AJ and presented him with a guitar that they smashed on stage. When the concert was over the group continued to hang out with AJ and gave him a copy of their new, yet-to-be released CD. It is for providing such exceptional and personal wish experiences as this that My Chemical Romance is being honored.

My Chemical Romance released their platinum-plus selling album The Black Parade in October 2006, which shot to No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart, selling more than 240,000 copies its first week of release. The album spawned four Modern Rock smash singles, including “Teenagers,” which hit the No. 1 spot on MTV’s TRL. The Black Parade was named 2006’s “Album Of The Year” by Blender Magazine, Rolling Stone called it “a rabid, ingenious paraphrasing of echoes and kitsch from rock's golden age of bombast," and Entertainment Weekly praised it as "riotously enjoyable.” The band is currently putting the finishing touches on an upcoming CD/DVD titled The Black Parade is Dead!. www.mychemicalromance.com. Presenting the award to the band will be Lorie Hennessey, Senior Manager, Celebrity and National Sports Program of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, and Christina Toy, Outreach & PR Associate of the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation. A special surprise for the band will be the appearance of AJ Cruz who will be part of the presentation ceremony.

About the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation®: The Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. In 2008 the Foundation celebrates 24 years of fulfilling magical wishes. One of the largest chapters nationwide, it has granted over 4,500 wishes in its 17 Northern California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Siskiyou, Solano and Sonoma. The goal of the Foundation is to grant a wish to every eligible child in its 17-county territory. Anyone can refer a child for a wish. In 2005, the Chapter was recognized with a coveted “Best in America Seal of Excellence” award, the first Make-A-Wish Chapter to achieve this distinction for its outstanding management and governance practices. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal. For more information or to refer a child for a wish, please call (800) 464-9474 or visit www.makewish.org.
