14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position

The Community Engagement Director manages the day to day operations of the Michigan History Center’s Community Engagement Section and leads the Center’s outreach and community engagement efforts. The individual supervises staff, manages budgets, and oversees visitor services, marketing, volunteer programs, public and education programs, heritage trail coordination and retail operations for the Michigan History Center and its associated field museum locations. As a member of the Center’s management team, the individual works with other managers to achieve excellence in all programs, use human and fiscal resources wisely, provide excellent visitor service, and build external partnerships and strong community ties that support the Center’s strategic agenda.

Duty 1 General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 55%

Direct Michigan History Center community engagement operations in a manner that ensures effective use of resources and timely delivery of projects and programs

Individual tasks related to the duty.

 Direct and support staff involved in center visitor services, education and community engagement activities, including support of field site staff work in these areas  Manage budget allotments and enterprise operations  Ensure compliance with state and departmental policies and procedures  Oversee retail operations (currently four stores) to ensure that they align with the Center’s mission and take advantage of unique market opportunities  Working with staff and other managers, coordinate the daily operation of visitor services  Lead the development and implementation of plans for 5 signature public events (Archaeology Day, Silver Bells, Statehood Day, Michigan Day, Be a Tourist in Your Own Town), Saturday and evening public programs  Coordinate and prioritize work generated by the education team for all sites, including leading the annual review of programs, new program content creation and delivery, and summer camp content development and delivery  Oversee, align and integrate the Heritage Trail program into the work of the Center  Coordinate and oversee the Center’s volunteer and intern programs  Coordinate and oversee the Center’s web presence and communications on the Michigan.gov platform Duty 2 General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 25%

• Lead Center efforts to build and strengthen community relations and partnerships, working to find the intersection between community needs and Center resources and ability to help fill them • Help develop and implement the Center’s strategic agenda • Serve on the Center marketing team and co-lead efforts for program, event and content promotion • Act as lead and/or serve on Center-wide work groups and project teams, as needed.

• Encourage agency-wide thinking by helping ensure that all project teams take full advantage of the talents of staff in all parts of the Center • Work with community advisory and support groups as assigned • Lead the Engagement Division’s support of programming, marketing, social media and outreach

25. What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function? The work area provides Center-wide leadership in important public-facing areas, including education, visitor services, marketing and community relations. This position is responsible for the operation of the Community Engagement Section and for managing staff and helping them contribute to excellence in all aspects of the Center’s programs. It brings education and public engagement expertise to the management of the Center as a whole.

Page 6 26. What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position?

EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major.

Preferred: Possession of a master’s degree in history, public history, education, museum education, communications, art history, museum studies, anthropology, American studies, architecture, architectural history, urban planning, library/information science, historic preservation, or archival management.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level.

Alternate Education and Experience - State Administrative Manager 15 Education level typically acquired through completion of high school and two years of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 14 level; or, one year of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 15 level, may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Preferred: Five years of professional, post-master’s experience in the museum field, including at least three years of senior management experience as either the director of an institution or the manager of a major department within a large institution.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Ability to lead staff • Ability to analyze financial information • Excellent oral and written communications skills • Ability to be both a collaborative team member and the leader of a collaboration • Knowledge of museum practices and standards for visitor services, education and public programs
