6.4 Physical Restoration Services or Procedures with Special Requirements

6.4.23 Osteomyelitis of the Extremities

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection that can cause an unstable medical condition with an uncertain prognosis. This condition may require that usually requires complicated and extensive medical treatment.

DRS considers sponsoring sponsors medical treatment for of an osteomyelitis infection only when:

 amputation of an extremity is recommended as a curative treatment; or  the osteomyelitis condition occurs as a complication of a DRS-sponsored surgery and the treatment is approved by the DARS medical director. if the infection is a complication of DRS-sponsored surgery.

Proposed treatment of the osteomyelitis infection must be reviewed and approved by the DRS medical director. For all other consumers with a bone infection in the extremities, DRS will support the treatment option of amputation only as recommended by the treating physician and approved by the DRS medical director.

Exceptions require review by a DARS medical director and approval by an area manager before DARS-sponsored treatment for osteomyelitis is included in a consumer’s individualized plan for employment (IPE).
