Youngling a White Bead to Go on Their Chain

Dear Parents,

Each February, schools everywhere celebrate “I Love to Read Month”. At Eagle Creek, our theme for this year’s event is “Star Wars Book Wars!” and each student is working towards a reading goal of 200 minutes this month!

That is 10 minutes per night during the week. Each student should strive for his or her personal best by reading above and beyond this minimum goal. The student with the most minutes will be awarded a free book. We will recognize students with different rewards as they achieve more reading minutes.

Reading calendars should be kept in students’ black folders. Please help your students by recording their reading minutes in the calendar every night and initialing them. Every Friday, I will tally their minutes. Students will progress through the various Jedi levels as they reach certain reading milestones. In Star Wars lingo, they will begin as members of the Alliance and progress to Younglings after reading 50 minutes, to Padawans after reading 100 minutes, to Jedi Knights after 150 minutes, and ultimately to Jedi Masters when they reach their goal of 200 minutes. Students will each have a star with their names on it on the outer space display outside our room, and their star will rise along with their minutes and their Jedi status. They will also receive the following rewards:

 A bookmark and chain for their backpack on the first of February

 Youngling – a white bead to go on their chain

 Padawan – a yellow bead to go on their chain

 Jedi Knight – a blue bead to on their chain

 Jedi Master – a red bead to go on their chain and a Jedi Master charm.

The first grade class with the most combined reading minutes gets a class party. Thank you for supporting your student in this reading event and have fun reading! Ms. Masters
