2015 Australian Schools/School Sport Australia Orienteering Championships September 25th to October 4th 2015 Ballarat, Victoria Bulletin 1

All States, Territories and New Zealand are cordially invited to contest the 2015 Australian Schools/School Sport Australia Orienteering Championships in Ballarat, Victoria organised by Orienteering Victoria and supported by School Sport Victoria.

The 2015 Australian Schools/School Sport Australia Orienteering Championships will be held in conjunction with “Dr Blake’s Mystery Tour” - Australian Orienteering Championships.

1. Program of Events

The championships will comprise eight events over the nine days. The four national championship events will be part of the National League competition and the three individual championships are expected to receive World Ranking Event status. Two open-entry events will follow the mid-week School Championships on the same days. There will be only one rest day following the inclusion of the Australian Schools Sprint Championships.

1 2. Arrival Teams should aim to arrive in Melbourne between 10.00am and 2.00pm Friday September 25th and move into the accommodation by late afternoon. The accommodation in Ballarat is approximately an 80 minute drive from the airport. An afternoon arrival will allow time for teams to settle into the accommodation and prepare for the evening meal.

3. Departure Departure will be on the afternoon of Sunday 4th October. Late afternoon flights are suggested as the event is about 100 minutes from Melbourne Airport.

4. Travel Arrangements Each team must make their own flight and bus bookings. Times from the Welcome Stranger Caravan Park to the events vary from 30 to 90 minutes. Buses can be booked via all of the major car hire companies.

5. Accommodation All teams are staying together at the Welcome Stranger Caravan Park (http://www.welcomestranger.com.au/accommodation/) near Brown Hill in eastern Ballarat for the duration of the carnival. Welcome Stranger is approximately 4km from Ballarat CBD and 115km from Melbourne Airport. Welcome Stranger offers -  Cabin accommodation each with bathroom facilities, linen included. Cabins are equipped with kitchens for preparation of snacks  Laundry  Wireless Internet (fee)  Kiosk  Pool, games room, tennis courts, mini golf, TV room, jumping pillow / playground  Supermarkets are with 5 – 10 minutes drive.

6. Meals

All meals will be provided for the teams, with the aim of providing high quality nutritionally balanced meals for young athletes. All major dietary requirements will be catered for. This includes dinner on Friday September 25th and breakfast/lunch on Sunday October 4th.

7. Costs

$740 (to be confirmed Accommodation and meals (9 days) depending on numbers) School Sport Australia levy, includes the National Secretary Surcharge of $11 (GST $22 inclusive) & the School Sport Australia Administration Levy also $11 (GST inclusive). Team management must of course take into account entry fees, bus costs, fuel & various tourist opportunities which may be selected.

2 8. Entries Schools competitors will be asked to enter as individuals (or as part of family entries if appropriate) using the on-line Eventor system. State officials will not have to coordinate team entries. Entry information will make clear the particular event numbers that apply to ASOC; the public will not be able to enter these events. More information will be provided in future bulletins.

9. Start Draw The start draw for the ASOC/School Sport Australia Individual event will take place after dinner on Sunday 27th September at the Opening Ceremony.

11. Educational Excursion A visit to Sovereign Hill has been arranged on the morning of Thursday 1st October. There will be two organised activities and the remainder of the time may be spent exploring the park. The visit goes for 2 hours plus a 1 hour lunch. The total cost of the excursion is approximately $30 including lunch per student (to be confirmed).

12. Presentation Dinner The Presentation Dinner will be held on Wednesday 30th September at the Victoria Bowls Club. A disco will follow at the same venue. The cost will be included in the ASOC 2015 (Host State) Event Levy.

13. Weather Ballarat experiences high rainfall in September and October. The temperatures can drop quite low at night. Average minimums for September-October: 5-6°C Average maximums: 14-17°C.
