PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Current Instructor, Department of Social Sciences, United States Military Academy West Point, New York Taught Course: International Relations. Taught cadets this comprehensive course utilizing a case study approach, requiring cadets to apply international relations theory to explain current events and analyze why states do what they do and what causes conflict and cooperation in the international system.

2007-2008 Student, Yale University Master of Arts in International Relations Program New Haven, Connecticut Focused in Strategic, Security, and European Studies. Selected for elite Grand Strategy Program taught by Professors John Gaddis, Charlie Hill, and Paul Kennedy. Studied French. Published two articles immediately after graduation. Completed the intensive two year program in a year and a half, despite taking additional courses.

2006 Special Forces Company Executive Officer Panzer Kaserne, Germany Second in command of a 90 man Special Forces Company. Planned and coordinated all logistical support for the company’s deployment to and from Africa for Operation Enduring Freedom – Trans Sahara. Managed an annual company budget in excess of $1 million.

2005-2006 Special Forces (Military Liaison Element) Detachment Commander Germany, Bosnia, and Serbia Led twelve-man Special Forces Team which simultaneously conducted operations in two-man elements on three continents. Served as the Special Operations Forces Liaison Officer between the Commanding General of NATO forces in Sarajevo, Bosnia and the U.S. Interagency Team at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia. Coordinated and conducted militarily and politically sensitive operations throughout the Balkans.

2004-2005 Special Forces (Mobility Team) Detachment Commander Germany and Iraq Led the preparation, training, and deployment to Iraq of a twelve-man detachment of Green Berets in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. Focused on securing Fallujah as part of the Coalition offensive to reclaim the city. Later secured the first free election in modern Iraq and then recruited, trained, and successfully conducted multiple surgical, nighttime combat operations in Baghdad with an Iraqi Army Specialty Platoon.

2004 Special Forces Battalion Assistant Operations Officer Panzer Kaserne, Germany During staff assignment, planned, tracked, and briefed the battalion’s training and upcoming operations to the battalion leadership. Briefed the battalion’s senior leadership weekly on Operation Iraqi Freedom missions and lessons learned in preparation for the deployment of battalion elements to Iraq. Supported the battalion’s deployment to Africa during the Pan-Sahel Initiative.

2002-2003 Student, Special Forces Detachment Officer Qualification Course Fort Bragg, North Carolina Graduated with Honors.

2000-2001 Airborne Infantry Battalion Adjutant Fort Bragg, North Carolina During staff assignment, oversaw personnel actions for a 750 man Task Force and graduated from the U.S. Army Jumpmaster School.

1999-2000 Airborne Infantry Platoon Leader Fort Bragg, North Carolina Led a platoon to excel while conducting numerous Airborne Operations and Live-Fire training exercises at Fort Bragg and the Joint Readiness Training Center. Commended for my leadership by then Brigadier General David Petraeus, the 82d Airborne Division’s Assistant Division Commander for Operations.

1998-1999 Student, Infantry Officers’ Basic Course and U.S. Army Ranger School Fort Benning, Georgia Graduated with honors from the Infantry Officers' Basic Course and completed the elite U.S. Army Ranger School.

November 2008 Panel Member for Harvard University’s Weatherhead International Fellows Visit, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY. Discussed teaching pedagogy and military deployment experiences with twenty U.S. and international fellows visiting West Point.

Summer 2007 “Back from Battle: Student Veterans’ Perspectives on the Iraq War.” Panel Member of a ‘Roundtable’ for the Yale Journal of International Affairs, Spring/Summer 2007, Volume 2, Issue 2, p. 134-154. Discussed experiences during deployment and the transition to graduate school, and shared thoughts regarding the current direction of the Iraq War.

October 2006 Paper Presentation, Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Conference, Washington D.C. Presented my paper to senior Army and civilian officials at the AUSA Annual Conference. Highlighted Major General Ridgway’s pioneering leadership during WWII as he transitioned the 82d Infantry Division into America’s legacy Airborne Division.

PUBLICATIONS

Accepted for and pending publication in hard copy and online by the peer reviewed Central European Journal of International and Security Studies. One of these is in line for publication in their Spring 2009 journal and one for their Fall 2009 journal. The journal editors have yet to determine which article will appear in which issue.
